India bans sugar exports .
” India is running low on sugar reserves, and the 2026 monsoon has started on a weak note.
That combination could become a major inflation risk.
🌧️ Weak rains → lower sugarcane yields
📉 Tight sugar stocks → reduced supply
☕ Higher sugar prices → costlier chai, sweets, beverages, and processed foods
India is the world’s second-largest sugar producer, so any significant production shortfall doesn’t just impact consumers—it can ripple through food inflation and global sugar markets.
The next few weeks of monsoon rainfall are now critical.
If rains don’t improve, your morning cup of chai may be the first place where the impact becomes visible.
Will the monsoon recover in time, or is another food inflation cycle already underway?
The rice crop is decimated . 43% rain deficit . This is average . In the bread basket region it is 65-75 % .

“…it can ripple through food inflation and global sugar markets.”
Global food price inflation is an absolute given next year when the lagging effects of the current fertilizer shortage and El Nino hit. That is going to be very destabilising, especially in countries where households spend half their budget on food, which is a good chunk of the Global South. Governments lose legitimacy rapidly under that kind of duress, as they did in the Arab Spring.
Are Europeans so bent on suffering they actually always hang out half naked in the blazing mid-day sun, or is it just mad Englishmen?
These heatwave stories ought to feature cattle sweltering in the shade of a lone tree, surrounded by swaths of bare hot fields. Or a shot of liquid tarmac. How are we to survive with no imagination?
Ah, there’s one. https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20260625-latest-developments-in-europe-s-heatwave caption is “People have taken to the shade to try to beat the heatwave in France.”
Followed by headlines:
France shuts nuclear reactors
Another child dies in France
Scores of heat deaths in Spain
101 million face +35C
UN blames fossil fuel pollution (as if anyone with a five cent brain disagrees)
Heat is dangerous, even deadly. So get out there and have fun!
Shane, the editorial choice of using frivolous pictures of people enjoying the sun to illustrate articles about dangerous heatwaves has long been a bête noire of climate realists.
I don’t feel strongly either way, tbh. Here in the UK, where aircon is limited in homes and work-places, it makes sense for people to seek out a cooling sea-breeze or body of water to jump in.
I did spot a rather good picture of an electric London bus erupting in flames yesterday but alas not in time to include it in the thread:
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/bus-fire-westbourne-park-london-depot-b1287521.html
Yes, more burning buses sounds right! Let me say Pan I am so amazed at the visuals you come up with here. Sometimes I wonder if you are tapped into cell phones around the world. “Flooding in Quzhou? We got your photo!” As for water sports, I understand the benefits, and I did enjoy these in a younger age, but I’ve come to love shade more and more.
Holy alpaca lips . . .
An original exclamation there, Mike! 💋
This seems very trivial compared to today’s climate feed. Here in northern Maine thunder storms have traditionally been very unusual. We had our 4th yesterday. Incredibally powerful and it is just June.
One of the valuable things about the comments here is local reporting, so thanks for sharing that. I encourage everyone to weigh in about their locale, when it makes sense.
Agreed! South Ontario is having a cooler and wetter June than normal, which is pleasant TBH, but a few T-storms are earlier than is typical. Blueberry season is almost upon us, but a farmer told me she lost half her plants due to early winter onset last November (the leaves didn’t have time to drop, which was apparently fatal). Damn, they’re my favourite.
Not at all, Duke. Storms becoming more frequent and more intense in places where they used to be rare is very much part of the story.
Islay is right in the bullseye tomorrow:

Oceans are now giving back the heat we have been dumping into them, suddenly it is a shock of heat waves around the globe. Who predicted this extreme speed of transformation?
Are the deniers waking up to this “new” reality? All humanity knew that was stable and predictable traded for a few generations of unsustainable consumption.
Here is the USA the 250th party is about to take over the media news cycle while many of us are grieving the loss of a livable planet. Has the epitaph been written?
Black peat, if X is anything to go by, deniers are doubling down, apparently enraged that their worldview is being challenged by immediate, real world events.
A killer thread – literally. 😱
Regarding “Hedge Fund Targets $500 Million for El Niño Crop Risk Trade”
“The growing threat posed by a so-called “super El Niño” to global food supplies is spurring the creation of a new commodities fund.
Hedge fund Moreton Capital Partners is targeting $500 million for a special-purpose vehicle to trade multiple commodities that stand to be impacted by the weather phenomenon, including South African corn, Malaysian palm oil and Australian wheat. The markets are underestimating risks, according to Moreton’s co-founder Les Finemore.”
Well placed by Pan in the sick humor/insane category he usually posts as the final article. “Let’s make money off world hunger!” Woo hoooooo!
Thanks, Cassandra.
I guess Moreton Capital Partners could come out on the wrong side of this speculation but it seems pretty solid to me. I’d be interested to know which funds are brave enough to be on the other side of these trades! This El Nino is looking worse by the day:
“Ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are already exceeding or approaching strong El Niño levels. All Niño regions are record warm except for Niño 1+2, which was warmer only at this time in 1983. These are huge anomalies for this time of year.”
https://x.com/BenNollWeather/status/2070148886161940872
As the suffering of the taxi driver with his sweltering head stuck out the cab window reminds me, since cabbies are often from foreign climes, of ICE, as in Police, while driving his ICE machine that is the main driver of ice melting from glaciers. Every thing is connected, as drivers by the millions, wiling in the heat, get into their living room-sized portable furnaces and herd together into cities that are already suffering the intense urban heat island effect. If you can’t get to the wildfires, bring the wiled fires into the hottest environment in your vicinity. Cool idea.
While wheat fields burst into flames in Syria, in the US vast corn fields are deliberately ignited under the hoods of millions of ICE machines; while India suffers from low sugar supplies, Brazil sets theirs on fire 🔥 under the hoods of millions of their own ICE machines, with AC cranked, the level of food incineration of Brazilian crops only intensifies.
This is the green solution our Corpogovernance has spawned to alleviate global warming.
People starve to feed the machines; swelter so that silicon wafers can stream YouTube videos from well-cooled server farms, whose ginormous footprints crush actual farms beneath tons of copper, steel and concrete, their cooling systems sucking the aquifers dry, using more water than the fields whose yields used to feed humanity and its domesticated animals.
There is no problem that our structure of government-for-corporate-profit can’t make exponentially worse, yet make money from, thereby calling the solution, no matter how disastrous, a resounding success. Because, in our constructed reality, as long as it is profitable, it is a success; if it generates tax revenue, what’s the problem? Look! Hundreds of billionaires! The system works!
The trillion dollar IPO of a company called SpaceX, that actually sends nothing into space; that launches a satellite network called Starlink, that has nothing to do with any star, proves how clever we are at fooling ourselves.
Rob, that is a rant with characteristic flair.
It is hard not to see the SpaceX IPO as the apogee of human hubris and excess, but no doubt some even more absurd monument to speculative mania will emerge if Ind Civ manages to squeak out a few more years.

We’ll be having none of that reason, logic or critical thinking on this rock. We’ve had none to this point, why start now? 😉
One of the key differences I note between wildfire crews in the 90’s (when I was working fireline) and wildfire crews today is that today’s crews are almost completely devoid of peer pressure to do a good job. Every personnel problem is the leaders problem. It’s a sloppy jobs program. If you’re waiting for these hero’s to come save your home from wildfire you’re in for a surprise. Most of them can’t name 2 trailer hitch sizes.
