“Arctic marine heat waves surge since 1980s, with record event lasting 480 days…

Survivalist posted an interesting story yesterday, I’m wondering what y’all think?
https://www.severe-weather.eu/global-weather/seasonal-weather-shift-el-nino-sea-ice-influence-forecast-2026-2027-united-states-canada-eruope-fa/
It seems to me that a weaker/wavier jet stream will make El Niño outcomes more difficult to forecast and that weather patterns will stall or linger longer as they move along in the jet stream. More yo-yo weather.
I think the break down of the jet stream and the loss of buffering as sea ice disappears is why we are getting a fat tail distribution for heat waves and floods/droughts instead of the gaussian fit we had in the Holocene. From now on there is only a 1-r chance each year that any area on earth is going to get through without a destructive event. r is still pretty small but growing by leaps and bounds. Once its (say) 5%, there’s a 23% chance you are wiped out within 10 years – either dead or forced to become a refugee.
Thank you for posting this, Survivalist, and Flippr for recycling it, as it were. George and Survivalist, I agree. There is ample evidence of jet stream distortions in today’s thread (in the Southern Hemisphere, too).
“Yo-yo weather” is very much the order of the day for us here in the UK now. This was the situation earlier in June:
“June brings more rainfall than all of spring to parts of UK… The wet start to summer marks a sharp turnaround from the exceptionally dry spring experienced across much of southern and eastern England…
“During the latter half of May, persistent high pressure brought exceptionally warm conditions …with temperatures exceeding 30°C for six consecutive days – an unprecedented spell for some locations.”

But they lack any conception or awareness of their own lives. They will be replaced by other life forms over and over again, for an inconceivable length of time, and they don’t care about that either. They will never die because they never truly came to be. It is us, humans, that want their lives to matter in the same way we think ours matter (because it makes us feel less alienated from nature and each other, which is the real problem which we can never confront directly because it feels like death). But even our own bodies are incapable of accommodating our fear+desire for mortality. Most of me wasn’t here last week and won’t be here the next.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpjcW-ltOFo
“… they lack any conception or awareness of their own lives.”
Jupiviv, I liked what Eckhart Tolle said about dogs and how they value being alive but non-conceptually:
“You just watch the tail… with some dogs you just look at them – just a little look is enough – and their tail goes… ‘Life is good! Life is good!’ And they are not telling themselves a story of why life is good. It’s a direct realization.”
France’s heatwave is increasingly beginning to resemble a national stress test. Not so much because temperatures are reaching 42°C or 43°C in some places, but because more and more systems are coming under pressure at the same time.
Within just a few days, more than fifty departments have been placed under the highest heat alert. Thousands of schools have either closed completely or switched to reduced schedules. Parents are forced to arrange emergency childcare. Students are sitting exams in classrooms where temperatures approach 40°C. In major cities, fans sell out within hours. Shopkeepers report elderly people and families with young children desperately searching for any form of relief.
The problems extend far beyond private homes. The Eiffel Tower has been forced to close early. Rail passengers have found themselves stranded for hours in malfunctioning high-speed trains with failed air conditioning. Around Bordeaux and elsewhere, power supply disruptions have occurred as the electrical system struggles with extreme temperatures. In Lyon, residents have begun installing homemade sunshades because their apartments have turned into what the French now call logements bouilloires — homes that function like pressure cookers.
Even the energy system is not immune. The Golfech nuclear power plant has had to suspend production because the waters of the Garonne River became too warm to provide adequate cooling. At precisely the same moment, electricity demand is rising as households and businesses turn to fans, cooling systems and air conditioning.
What is striking is that the crisis is becoming less of a meteorological event and more of an infrastructure problem. Schools, railways, hospitals, housing, electricity generation and urban cooling systems are all being tested simultaneously by conditions for which many of them were never designed.
The debate is therefore no longer simply about climate models or temperature records. Increasingly, it is about the practical question of how a modern society continues to function when extreme heat is no longer an exception but a recurring feature of summer.
Perhaps that is the most important development of this week. Not the heat itself, but the moment when a society begins to discover how many of its daily routines depend on a climate that is slowly disappearing.
Zip, thank you for the local intel. This is some heatwave.

“Perhaps that is the most important development of this week. Not the heat itself, but the moment when a society begins to discover how many of its daily routines depend on a climate that is (not so ) slowly disappearing.”
Like a field goal in a tied football game, it is not a foregone conclusion, it is a gone-for conclusion, and we are getting what we have gone for, so we shouldn’t be too surprised when it is gone for good.
By which I mean to say that it would appear to an outside observer that the climate change is a hoax meme may have been articulated by the Furor in Washington, but the world has reacted to climate derangement as if it were true instead of that it is true, opting to pour trillions of capitalism’s “limited time offer” of profitable returns into thousands of tons of armamentaria; to funnel trillions more into R&D on hi-tech weaponry, surveillance systems, and facilities to warehouse human beings; on Rock Candy Mountain dreams of insta-riches that only put on display our real stupidity via artificial intelligence-enabled nightmarish dystopian delusions force-fed to us by techno-bubbleheaded billionaires.
As we are to discover before summer’s end, the last depression, which we prefer to call The Great Recession, or the Great Financial Crisis, was short-lived only thanks to China, but what the ramifications are of the fact that the Communist regime saved the Capitalist west have been completely unspoken, since the boom/bust cycles of the capitalist economy enriches the only people capable of altering it; something they will never do as their power, domination and control increases after every bust.
Hence the climate derangement that prevails in the halls of power, it has become increasingly obvious, must be addressed before that of nature will ever be meaningfully confronted.
“…the Great Financial Crisis …was short-lived only thanks to China… the Communist regime saved the Capitalist west.”
Rob, I had never thought of it like that, although I suppose China is a socialist market economy rather than a strictly communist one. China did indeed save our collective bacon, though, with its cheap coal, cheap labour and massive credit-fuelled stimulus.

Yep – down here in NZ it’s a pretty warm start to winter. I was out on the bike in shorts and T-shirt last weekend. No snow on the mountains (elevation 2000m plus) worth speaking of, and that which does fall melts within days as we are experiencing a predominance warm north to northwest flows over the country instead of the usual switch to getting more frequent south to SW flows from the Southern Ocean. I’ve noticed this pattern getting stronger each year for the last decade or so but the last few years have been nuts. Gone are the days of permanent snow fields when hiking in the mountains in summer. Major glaciers have been noticeably contracting in volume for at least 2 decades…
Craig, the winter heat anomalies are even freakier than the summer ones for me.
I remember when we had our hottest winter day on record in Feb 2019 with 21.2C (70F) at Kew Gardens and a colossal fire raging up near Saddleworth moor in W Yorks. Unnerving.
