Last minute shoppers are gonna be a pain in the ass when SHTF.
France is EU’s largest wheat producer. The heatwave there is going to impact harvests.
🌾 Europe’s 2026 crop season is becoming a story of winners and losers.
The latest MARS outlook shows that drought and heat are cutting yield potential across parts of Western and Central Europe, while Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey are heading toward exceptional harvests.
Key forecasts:
🌾 Wheat: 5% below last year’s yield
🌾 Barley: 10% below last year
🌽 Corn: 3% above last year
🌻 Sunflower: 11% above last year
🌱 Rapeseed: 5% below last year
Regional highlights:
🇷🇴 Romania
✅ Wheat +15% above average
✅ Barley +14% above average
✅ Strong corn and sunflower prospects
🇧🇬 Bulgaria
✅ Corn +23% above average
✅ Sunflower +35% above average
🇹🇷 Turkey
🚀 Soft wheat +15% above average
🚀 Durum wheat +22%
🚀 Barley +39%
Meanwhile…
⚠️ France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary continue to battle drought and heat stress.
⚠️ A new heatwave could further reduce yields before harvest.
The bigger picture:
A strong harvest in Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria could increase Black Sea grain competition and put pressure on wheat and corn prices during the new marketing season.
Weather remains the final referee, but Europe’s crop map is becoming increasingly divided between drought-hit regions and near-record producers. 🌍📈

Thanks for that, Ravi. At least the climatic “tilting to extremes” is still generating winners. Those will dwindle.
Duke, at least there is some sort of underlying survival imperative at play. I guess it makes those scenes marginally less depressing than the Black Friday melees, fuelled purely by greed and FOMO.
Quite right. Those folks are fighting over air conditioners because they think they might die without one.
Perceptions of risk to one’s wellbeing secondary to objective scarcity really gets the lizard brain responses going.
So depressing. Water for data centres. Water for lithium mining. Water for humans – getting dicey. It is so rare to come across something positive anymore, I thought I would drop a link if you need to read about something that leans the other way. https://tvpworld.com/93899136/lesser-horseshoe-bat-conservation-in-poland-spawns-foreign-copies
Thank you, Blue Moose. That is heartening:
“The endangered mammal has suffered from the impact of humans on its environment, shrinking the Polish population of the species to just 100–200 at its nadir 30 years ago. But since then, largely through the efforts of the Pro Natura environmental NGO, its numbers have soared to over 16,000.”
The purpose of this blog is to focus on the extremes, the flashpoints, and the areas of risk and vulnerability because they illumine our overall trajectory, but I’m not some Debbie Downer who only likes bad news. I personally watch a lot of animal rescue and random act of kindness videos to leaven the mix.
Reading this is becoming downright exhausting.
Gird your loins, Mike. El Nino is only just getting started and its effects lag, so things will be getting a lot crazier through (NH) autumn and winter.
Pan, I hope the tempest spares you. It doesn’t appear all that bad from a quick search of yt clips but still. Anyway, intense muggy heat followed by heavy rainstorms followed by muggy heat seems to be the new normal for spring-summer worldwide. Although I suppose record summer temps in places like Scotland don’t necessarily imply sustained +35 C heat like the rest of the UK.
Also worth noting as an addendum to Duke’s post about retail freny in France, is that the UK’s response to its own climato-energetic polycrisis has been to dial its already feral political climate up to eleven. The drama between Reform and Restore makes the 2000s political satire-sitcom “Thick of it” look bland and obsolete. You literally cannot make this up.
Jupiviv, it’s all very unedifying and embarrassing really. The only comfort is that we are far from alone in having our politics turn pathological.
Yes, the tempest spared me, thank Gawd. We only had a few very loud and ominous rumbles of thunder from the direction of Northern Ireland when I was out with the dog. We live on an exposed hillside and storms have blown out my electricity and internet more than once, so I was relieved they passed us by.

Another word for that is DEATH. Something that’s sounding pretty good right now; I feel the same as Mike B. above. Every day I light a candle for my loved ones who have passed from this plane and I tell them it won’t be too long before I get to join them. 🍾

Cassandra, any time I have a brush with mortality it is clear to me how much I do not want to die. However, I can see that conceptually the idea of an end to problems and suffering could have some appeal.
I think the vast majority of people feel the same as you, Pan. However I’m quite a bit older than you so I’ve seen quite a bit more shit and I’m pretty fed up with homo destructus. 🤪
In the meantime, I’m making pizza tonight and though I rarely drink, I got some Corona Light to go with it (I know, I am a totally lame beer drinker) so…. party!! 🍻
I’m with you Cassandra, ageing, a bunch of health problems a.k.a. “multiple chronic conditions”, but one down.. my right eyeball.. the eye specialist found a hole in the macula months ago, so referred me to the public hospital clinic for assessment for treatment options or surgery, etc…blah..blah.. anyway, it seems it “fixed itself ” while waiting all those months on the waiting-for-an-appointment list 😄
That’s probly how COP and most world govts are thinking, if we wait long enough it will just “fix itself”…
Aus is phasing out the incentives, rebates for solar, batteries, upgraded modern elektrickery appliances like reverse-cycle air-con systems etc, heat pumps and all that stuff by early next year.. around the same time of getting the annual letter of increased elektrickery prices…
So, started researching maybe getting a house-battery installed with my solar panels…
Getting a couple quotes but methinx still too expensive in up-front cost…
Besides if I get my pensioner rebate in a few months…
So, like you Cassandra … I’d rather spend my remaining days & finances on “bread and circuses” or …. pizza and beer…
Get teary-eyed over Hallmark shows like The Way Home… or scary, freakout nightmares.. watching “From”… that Season 4 Finale was edge of the seat stuff…
Second heat dome incoming:
The gates of hell remain wide open for Europe:
No hit-and-run this time—it’ll drag on for days, “Omega Blockade” on the way!
The latest data dropping into meteorological models paints a far more insidious and grueling picture:
-The SICAK KUBBE (HEAT DOME) at the end of June will be followed by a second Heat Dome in early July, poised to swallow a much wider area over western Europe and potentially linger far longer than the first one.
-The first dome at the end of June was aggressively extreme but relatively short-lived. However, according to the latest ECMWF outputs for July 7-10, this new system is forming an Atmospheric Blockage (Omega). The high-pressure system could lock in over Europe like a massive “heat lid,” trapping hot air inside for days (at least 6-9 days).
-🔥 Cumulative Heat Threat:
The first wave already completely dried out and baked the soil moisture in western Europe. With no moisture left, this incoming dome will heat the surface much faster and more mercilessly. Each day will be hotter than the last!
🌡️ New Max Temperature and Record Expectations in Models (expected to start July 7-10)
🇪🇸🇵🇹 Spain & Portugal: Thermometers in Andalusia and inland areas are forecast to hit the 44°C – 46°C range, smashing absolute July records.
🇫🇷 France: The epicenter of the new dome is once again southwestern France. Surface temps between 43°C – 45°C will put local records on shaky ground again!
🇩🇪🇧🇪 Germany & Benelux: With the urban heat island effect, inland temps could climb to 38°C – 41°C, potentially rewriting July extreme stats.
🇬🇧 England (South): London and southern coasts face paralyzing peaks of 34°C – 37°C.
⚠️ International Alert: This immovable blockade for days will max out forest fire risks across France, Spain, and Italy, while dropping river levels and severely straining energy grids.
The first wave was a shock; the second will turn into a full-on war of attrition. As Europe roasts at twice the global average speed, July is gearing up to go down in meteorological history!
(Météo-France and global forecast centers (ECMWF & GFS) show over 70% agreement on this scenario. Experts agree that Europe’s soil, stripped of all moisture by June’s heat, could shatter records far more easily under this second blow!)
This data is fresh. Long-range weather forecasts aren’t 100% guaranteed—we’ll see day by day, as models update, whether this incoming temperature assault fizzles out or spirals into an even bigger catastrophe. Here’s hoping this new dome breaks up and we get temps back to normal 🙏
Here’s hoping indeed, Ravi. This current heatwave is quite bonkers enough.
Denmark’s national heat record has just fallen and, “It’s so hot in Germany the Autobahn literally burst open at the seams and had to be closed down.”

So Where’s the plan for cooling livestock in a heatwave? After > 30 years of COP, there isn’t one. While people fight for AC units livestock and chickens die by the Hundreds of thousands, yet coal production soars, plans for methane emissions reductions are scrapped, refineries and oil storage facilities are targeted and exploded via missiles whose accuracy is achieved via advanced electronic systems whose toxic components get atomized with each drone and missile fired, accumulating in the atmosphere faster than the satellites that guide them proliferate in the exosphere.
Yet COP has nothing on its agenda to address any of these issues, its host broadcasting the impossibility of rationality by refusing to invite a country it has disagreements with.
Meanwhile, ICE machine production surges to > 35million. Producing poison gasses that shortens the lives of millions via respiratory ailments, the auto, Otto, is a chemical weapon of mass destruction. Cars, together with the industries and factories that build and the fuel that powers them, has chemically changed the atmosphere of the entire planet. In our heart, We know this. Mankind begins to understand. These Machines will claim all life. Not just our own. You know this. You have foreseen it. In the gathering heat, the will of the Machine grows strong. It works hard now driven by the hands of men. Men, who are so easily seduced by its power. The icesheet of Greenland has but to slide off its land, make the ocean its new home and the world will fall. It is close now, so close one’s blood runs cold. For mankind has given Machines dominion of the planet and, by extension, all life on Earth, even unto the ending of the world. And our response is to keep building more and more and more of them, even as the resources needed to quench their thirst and power their ever-growing appetite for energy exceeds our own, and we have neither the will, nor ability to stop their exponential growth. Ever.
“Yet COP has nothing on its agenda to address any of these issues, its host broadcasting the impossibility of rationality by refusing to invite a country it has disagreements with.”
Rob, I recall that this COP had already been subject of an extended squabble for hosting rights between Australia and Turkey. It is apparently intended to mark a shift from negotiating to delivering tangible results, because 30 previous cops weren’t quite enough to enact meaningful change.
The problem with adaptation is that it is expensive and we are collectively on our uppers.
Well stated, Rob.
Yeah, Rob, that was beautiful. Standing ovation from.here.
As the current trope goes.in sporting circles (“Why not us?”), why not the truth?
Thank you Cassandra, 😙 Martin, and JRR Tolkien (from whose LOTR the last paragraph was shamelessly lifted). Lacking the latter’s ability, yet wishing to inspire in & share with readers his (and any other authors whose words effect an emotional response in me) linguistic virtuosity, I use his language and phrasing to try and inculcate that feeling in others. Your kind words indicate that I’ve served my mentor, at least in this case, proud.

Self sabotaging themselves i see a trend here.
Sounds like poetic justice, Heather:
“AI wasn’t exactly the problem. Instead, it all went wrong because its experienced workers left before Ford could get them to transfer their valuable knowledge to Ford’s AI systems and help refine the tech intended to obviate them.”
Expertise is the province of Labor; Capital can only buy it.
Obviate: render unnecessary… even drivers:
Here in SF, office workers have to thrust themselves down the street on skateboards, contending with empty Waymos, bristling with mirrors and antennae (such that the energy to pilot the vehicle supersedes what it takes to propel it) that are granted right-of-way.
‘These machines will claim all life”.
And as with right-of-way, it is humanity that will legislatively enable them to do so.
It’s amazing how much discomfort this species is enduring & still being able to constantly maintaining it’s ability to avidly avoid ever admitting it is the problem.
At the moment things still feel quite normal to most in North America. I can head down to the grocery store and grab a bag of potatoes, a bag of onions, and a family pack of pork chops, and then feed myself supper every evening for a week for roughly a few dollars a plate. Large bags of rice and dried beans are also plentiful. Perhaps in 2 or 3 years from now those food items will come to feel more distant and costly.
If the Sensible Doomers™ are prepped up properly then the population bottleneck will perhaps select for system thinkers and avid accumulators.
System thinkers and avid accumulators share a fascinating cognitive crossover. Both view the world through a lens of interconnectedness and delayed effects. While “accumulators” physically or digitally gather resources, “system thinkers” map the abstract flows and accumulations that govern the behavior of complex environments.
This combination forms a powerful mental model for managing assets, habits, and knowledge.
While an avid accumulator focuses on increasing inflows or reducing outflows to maximize their reserves, a system thinker looks at why it’s accumulating, the limits of the system, and how the accumulation affects surrounding processes. A pathological hoarder accumulates without a function. A system thinker knows that resources must one day flow to be useful.
…… might have to change my moniker.
