Update in India .
41 % deficit average but 65-80% in the bread basket areas .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwikSllqnAs
https://mausam.imd.gov.in/responsive/monsooninformation.php
165 dams with water level at only 27 % of normal .
ndia’s Monsoon Is Entering a Make-or-Break Phase
After nearly 3 weeks of the monsoon season, India is still running a staggering 41% rainfall deficit.
That’s not a small miss.
That’s the kind of deficit that starts raising concerns about:
• Kharif sowing 🌱
• Reservoir recharge 💧
• Groundwater recovery
• Food inflation 📈
The encouraging part?
Multiple weather models are now showing a potentially explosive rainfall window during the next 2–3 weeks, with widespread rains expected across Central, Western and Eastern India.
If these forecasts verify, the monsoon could rapidly erase much of the current deficit.
If they don’t…
India could be staring at one of the most concerning monsoon starts in recent years.
The next 15-20 days may decide whether 2026 becomes:
🌧️ A delayed but successful monsoon
OR
⚠️ A season remembered for drought fears, crop stress, and water shortages.
Every weather enthusiast, farmer, trader, and policymaker should be watching this closely.
The stakes couldn’t be higher.
https://x.com/gaurav_kochar/status/2068261234412040484/photo/2
Thank you for the updates on that, Ravi.
And also spare a thought for Pakistan, getting well below its (formerly) allocated share of Indus river water as India weaponises upstream infrastructure. An insufficient monsoon is only going to make it easier for New Delhi to justify tightening its grip.
A major monsoon warning is flashing across India.
This latest probabilistic forecast suggests nearly 90% of the country could face below-normal rainfall during the June–August monsoon season.
🌧️ Areas traditionally dependent on consistent monsoon rains are showing elevated odds of rainfall deficits.
🌾 Risks could increase for agriculture, reservoir levels, hydropower generation, and rural water supplies if this outlook verifies.
📉 With El Niño rapidly strengthening in the Pacific, concerns about widespread moisture stress are growing.
The monsoon supports the livelihoods of hundreds of millions and influences food prices, crop yields, and economic activity across the country.
If these projections hold, the second half of 2026 could become a critical test for India’s agricultural sector.
Are we looking at one of the most challenging monsoon seasons in recent years?

IRGC says the straight is closed again
US Central Command has disputed the claim. Either way, this is not going to inspire confidence in shipping companies.
US claims that it has the capability to ensure that shipping can continue through the strait safely. Iran said ships should not transit or they will be in jeopardy. We will who’s able to implement their policy.
It seems some ships have transited using Omani waters, close to the Omani coast, where there is apparently some US naval support to help ensure their safety. Shipping is at best down to a trickle. This is gonna get very interesting.
Does anyone know who is responsible for this fubared clusterfuck?
“They” need to do something. “Somebody” needs to take action.
While I’m waiting, I’ll just talk & listen to how smart I am. “That’s the ticket.”
Research by Oxfam International found that the average billionaire emits roughly 3 million tons of CO2e per year—much higher than the global average of roughly 4 tons per person.
According to an IIASA study, the richest 10% of the world’s population are responsible for two-thirds of observed global warming since 1990.
Individual analyses of top tycoons—such as Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk—reveal that their combined lifestyle and investment emissions outpollute the annual energy use of millions of average homes.
Studies consistently point to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich or tech pioneers like Bill Gates as having the largest individual carbon footprints.
About 10 years ago a large number of fools, like Nick G over at POB, were touting Musk as the savior of the planet cuz he was gonna make self driving electric cars, or something. Now he’s a leading polluter. So maybe those idiots should bear some culpability as well.
On a positive note, all these people are gonna starve out or be killed in famine related violence.
If I understand the second link, an extra two degrees above 2020 would include 0.4 to 0.6 degrees from warming induced emissions. By NASA equivalent CO2 and Hansen ECS we have enough man made emissions for another 3.5 to 4 degrees already. By prorating (for illustration to show trends only, as the systems involved aren’t linear at all) this would give 5.4 to 6.7 total heating. Those would be the lower limits as we aren’t going to suddenly stop man made emissions.
This means we are clearly heading to a hot house, and from many other recent stories we’re getting there much faster than previously thought, and the extreme events that the warming is causing are more frequent and consequential than expected. There is never going to. be any meaningful planned carbon dioxide removal, but an unimaginably huge roll out of, as yet unknown, CDR must be the only thing that scientists still discussing an achievable 2 degree limit can be relying on.
I think much of the mid-latitudes will be unsurvivable for several days by the fifties, and significant oil and gas reserves will be stranded because the human race will be so rapidly reduced (a few years ago I’d have considered both these virtually impossible). The cognitive dissonance levels in the face of the rapidly accelerating climate disruption also need a rescaled y-axis.
George, thank your thoughts. That second article caught my eye, too.
“Of the 11 Earth system models used in the most recent IPCC assessment, none included warming-induced emissions from all of the main sources – wildfire, wetlands, and permafrost.”
Makes a mockery of Michael Mann’s “The truth is bad enough” nonsense.
Also, from the paper – “Our results likely underestimate WIE in two respects”. There are probably more than two ways and the underestimation will soon turn out to be a lot.
“I think much of the mid-latitudes will be unsurvivable for several days by the fifties”
I believe most of us live in the mid latitudes. I think it will be curtains for the vast majority by then. Probably much sooner the way things are going. It only takes ONE unsurvivable day to be dead.
To say nothing of little things like peak fossil fuels which it seems we are tipping over now and which will keep increasing conflicts over resource depletion – not just fossil fuels, of course.
🤯 😱 💥
Agreed – for conflicts my bet is on Ethiopia and any and all of its neighbours or the Maghreb next, and then they might expand and meet in the middle somewhere in the Sahel coup belt. And I think the biggest grey, swan will be a cascading trophic collapse, probably marine in origin.
The oceans supply roughly 3 billion people with at least 20% of their daily protein intake. I don’t suppose that’ll last much longer.
