Robert Hunziker’s latest:
The Wobbling Planet – It’s Destabilizing!
“Science is under attack throughout the world. Meanwhile, there’s substantial scientific evidence that the planetary system is turning unstable. This may not strike most people as a big problem because ‘life goes on,’ an attitude that’s more and more prevalent and one of the factors behind anti-science attitudes. But if, in fact, the planetary system is becoming unstable, if it is true, life will be hell.”
Thanks, Edward. Starts out strong. Then “However, time is running out; incremental progress will no longer suffice to prevent catastrophic outcomes. A lot needs to squeeze into the next five years, or all bets are off.
There are some favorable signs, for example, renewables are on a strong pathway in parts of the world economy, 90% of vehicle sales in Norway today are fully electric. In Denmark, the EV market share is almost 60%.
Rockström: “As of today, we are in a danger zone. But we still have an opportunity to turn this around.” 🤣
Pair that with Panopticon’s link above about renewables and Jevon’s Paradox.
I am grateful for every day because as we know we are on a a path to hell. (Documented here daily. Welcome back, Pan!)
Yes, I was questioning the “But we still have an opportunity to turn this around”. However, I like Robert’s writings so I let it slide. There was once an opportunity to turn this around but that opportunity has passed I’m afraid.
The hopium is to be expected almost universally. I still appreciate the rest of it so as always thanks for sharing his articles.
I’ve written to Robert Hunziker about his ridiculous hopium windups, and he’s always gracious and genuine in response, but msot people cannot fight compulsions.
One place hopium is not obligatory is r/collapse, kind of big brother to this site. R/collapse made the mainstream of the zeitgeist:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/26/rcollapse-reddit-apocalypse-news
Of course, it’s mostly a nothing-burger article.
I got sick of r/collapse real quick. It’s a corporate site, of course, with namby-pamby rules, juvenile voting tabulations, and working-for-free tone police censoring the rabble.
It’s got some drive-by shooters, though, and a goodly amount of folk there have done the intellectual work to know shit’s toast.
Martin, I haunted r/collapse for a while, trying to promote this site, but in the end, time was too pressing.
Like you, I recall that there are a lot of people there who understand what we are up against.
That’s an interesting thumbnail with “‘The Caspian Sea is shrinking. It is visible with the naked eye’…” I can’t even make out what it is.
It only shows up on one YouTube video thumbnail with a crazy title.
“U.S. Miners Stripped the Surface of Western Alaska, and What They Found Left Russia Speechless”
The article itself is worrisome though. The article picture reminded me of Lake Tahoe that was dangerously low a couple of years ago but the levels look normal now. But with all these server farms and the AI training it probably won’t be long before Tahoe is dangerously low again.
“‘We are perilously close to the point of no return’: climate scientist on Amazon rainforest’s future…”
Don’t they keep saying that? That we are perilously close to the point of no return? I think we passed the point of no return.
Maybe they mean the Point of Know Return?
Kansas – Point of Know Return
Edward, I thought the picture was rather odd. Google images recommended it under “shrinking Caspian sea” or some such but perhaps it is not the Caspian at all. It might even be AI generated.
The internet is becoming such a hall of mirrors. I use a time-specific search for these threads, usually casting my net back 48 hours, but AI has started recycling old news in such a way that it fools the search engine into thinking it is current. I have to be careful to weed those out.
Some articles also seem to be entirely written by AI now. They’re not inaccurate – just weirdly bland and pointless.
I’ll raise you “Icarus” by Kansas, as he seems such a good analogue for our current predicament, with the laws of physics poised to triumph over human ingenuity:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kesio4k-dMU
“Nearly all of Utah is in drought. Gov. Cox again asks Utahns to pray and fast for rain.”
“Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has declared that Sunday, June 29, will be a “Day of Prayer and Fasting for Rain” and encouraged Utahns to conserve water as wildfire season intensifies.”
Prayer? Hope I don’t offend any religious people but prayer and fasting? Maybe we can call in some Native Americans to do a rain dance. Actually, I think a lot of Christians think God will intervene when the world starts to collapse. Perhaps we could consult with Richard Dawkins!!! Even though he comes across as arrogant, I still liked his book, “The God Delusion”.
I have to que up Kansas again. Kansas – Dust in the Wind
Has anyone tried air guitar for rain? How about cracking an egg on your head while smoking a cigar? Anybody?
Dawkins was an idiot, Stephen Rose could dance all over him. He is a product of his time.
Meanwhile the god thing is something that changes over history, I still like the female god periods, not a heap of murdering back then 😊
I wonder what gods will develop over this historic period? People have never felt more helpless in the civilised West, we all watch whilst those with power chuck us under the bus.
Back in the 60’s, another time of massive change, we saw UFOs. This time the changes are not consumerism (but are related)
People in the margins will be writing about it.
Recent events in the Middle East have been spiced for me by the knowledge that the likes of Pete Hegseth and Mike Huckabee have close ties to Christian Zionism, which interprets current events as a precursor to the end times and the second coming.
Meanwhile, apocalypticism has its own adherents in Iran in the form of millenarianists, who foresee a final, great battle as heralding the return of the Hidden Imam.
Organised religion is not for me – had my fingers burned there – but I try to keep an open mind when it comes to the metaphysical. I find a cocky, absolutist materialist like Dawkins as tiresome as a hectoring preacher tbh.
I was raised atheist, socialist/communist parents – but in my Uni youth days was curious about the ubiquity of religion, it was a time of cults, Hare Krishna’s dancing on city streets and a youth passion to travel to India & wax forth lyrically about Hinduism, Buddhism etc
What was the attraction?
Just recently I heard something on the Fall of Civilisations podcast series showing ancient religious icons and idols, and the narrator speculated that we were a hierarchical species from our earliest origins, seeking wisdom, comfort, knowledge, insights or *whatever* from a “Higher Power” whether ‘Mother Nature’ and her natural Law of cyclic seasons, of birth, death and rebirth, or embodied prophets of disembodied Gods ‘speaking words of wisdom’ .. evolving through such things as ‘Divine Right of Kings’ and leaders being forgiven their sins..
After all, as they say “there are no atheists in the trenches”.
I find heavy materialism, dry and boring, bit like Russian literature, fiction, TV, film etc even news… it may be factual, and accurate..it may even be solid truth.. but without human cultural context, the spiritual etc .. it’s just so bloody boring..
Recently I found a young man on YouTube from Mariopol, you may remember it was the city in the south-east of Ukraine taken by Russia early in the war.. this dude runs “Videos From Mariupol” channel and recently talked about the differences between Russian and Ukrainian propaganda that he experienced .. (basically the lack of propaganda from the Russians) .. factual, correct, accurate but incredibly boring monotone… That doesn’t even crow about their achievements, such as the amazing rebuilding in eastern & southern Ukraine.. never mentioned in the media.. but the people who live there, and are trickling back into the once bombed out cities and towns are smiling as to the unbelievable speed of rebuilding.. and replacing old decrepit Soviet era grey drabness turned to rubble and upgrading of infrastructure .. complete with colourful artwork..the locals can see with their own eyes, in real time, the Russian governance truly enacting a “Build Back Better” strategy.
But you wouldn’t know it from the Russian TV media…
Indeed, I don’t think Russians have ever produced a light comedy?
Such a serious culture, just getting on with the job that needs doing.. boring, but must have something going for it, for the 150 million Russians who call it home.
Although I loved the film Brother .. a very sardonic, wry, dark realism, an exploration of 1990s Russian society during its collapse.. almost post-apocalyptic in its film style, but without the Hollywood melodrama. But still..a quiet spirituality threading through the odd dialogue.
Rain, the Russian propaganda that I’ve seen has been pretty fiery, rather than dull. The UK, as a pro-Ukraine agitator, is often in the firing line of Channel One and Rossiya 1; sometimes even threatened with nuclear or other annihilation.
Igor Markov said we were a nation of ugly, degenerate freaks. Might be a grain of truth to that. 😂
I don’t see anything like that here, though I’m sure it exists to scare non-Russians.. but not on their regular everyday Russian channels for everyday Russians (and now Eastern-Ukrainians) whereas everyday (West) Ukrainian channels have been full of it since the 2014 Coup D’Etat in Kiev.
Could also be like BBC-Persia which is full of anti-Iran propaganda to be fed to Persians, especially those in the diaspora.. but it’s owned & controlled by BBC or Qatar, and out & proud pro-Western fiefdom led by appointed “royals”.
I’m not a pro-Russian by any means… But, I don’t believe it’s people or its leadership is as evil as painted 24/7 ad nauseum .. I believe Russia had valid reasons for its behaviour, and took years and years of trying to mediate diplomatic peace agreements in the Ukrainian Civil War. .
Most Aussies hear the name Putin and physically flinch because of a decade + of clever audacious propaganda..
. it’s weird, or I am the real weird one,, in just how well it works to mobilise hatred in millions of people..
but I’m sure not pro-Ukrainian either and never have been, I remember the 8 years of the Ukraine Civil War, the anti-Maidan protests bringing in the Ukrainian army (not just police) to mow them down under tanks etc, the Ukrainian military shelling of cities like Donetsk, Mariopul..turning off electricity to whole regions of “rebels” etc
Russia has over 2 million Ukrainian refugees, more than the whole of UK/Europe combined… We are told they fled West to Europe, but really more fled East.. the Ukrainian navy based in Odessa basically defected en-mass to Russia in 2014 ..
8 years before the war started.. and the Crimean peninsula voted in an emergency referendum to declare independence and secede from Ukraine in 2014 just weeks after the coup.
Putin didn’t “Annex” Crimea in 2014.. the people themselves left Ukraine when the coup happened and the newly installed fascist President made a foul speech about removing the eastern peoples of the Donbass…and announced a series of draconian laws discriminating against 15 million of its own population. (It’s still on YouTube)
I remember all these headlines on my very mainstream media news on occasion for many of those years…
But it got “memory-holed”
And a great BBC documentary from about 2012, about the rise of Nazism in Ukraine…That disappeared off i-view when I looked for it again..
Orwellian thought control… War is Peace.. reality reversed…
Every Accusation is actually a Confession (or Projection)
As for Russian statements about the West.. I enjoy reading Medvedev (Former President/Prime Minister & currently senior official of Russia’s National Security Council)
I’ve forgotten what he calls Starmer, but calls Macron, “Micron”, and Zelensky The “Green Tapeworm” and a photo of Merz, Starmer and Macron he labelled “The Coalition of the Brain-Dead”.. He often mocks Trump with a dry wit, but at least he is witty and entertaining,( for a Russian..)
Channel One and Rossiya-1 are literally the regular every day channels for the Russian populace.
No.. for diaspora maybe, but main channels for everyday Russians is RT & Moskova-24 .. Channel one etc are like FOX or GB News.. mostly watched for sports..
Rain, please don’t gaslight me. Rossiya-1 (state-owned) and Channel One (partially state-owned) are respectively the first and second most viewed channels within Russia for Russians. They are not mostly watched for sports. “Vremya” on Channel One is the most watched news show in Russia.
RT is multi-lingual and international. Moskova 24 caters for the Moscow region, as the name suggests, and, apparently, for Crimea.
“Most Aussies hear the name Putin and physically flinch because of a decade + of clever audacious propaganda.” Same here in USA. The power of propaganda really hit home for me during the pandemic and it continues re Israel’s genocide of the Gazan Palestinians (and many other issues too of course).
Anyway climate..

Looks bad for me…
So today, my prep for the 3-4 day bomb cyclone .. was
Nrly 2 hours taking the canines out for the looongest run of their lives to date; and using the laundromat giant-sized washers/dryers for a ton of laundry…
Good luck with your storm. 😬
Well.. I will bow to your greater knowledge, sorry my bad, don’t shoot me for not being hateful enough for all things Russian
… Still boring, dry and far too serious..
but the ones I watch are mostly RT and Sputnick net-only versions.
I must be weird
And my storm… Also ordering a ton of fried chicken in case power goes out 🙂
Rain, Russophobia has nothing to do with this.
All nations, and especially those embroiled in conflict, propagandize like mad in every way they can. It would be hopelessly naive to imagine otherwise. Russian propaganda covers the full spectrum from subversive/covert to absolutely on the nose, and, yes, includes humour too.
