Schools here in liberal Scotland are hot on teaching climate change but they also peddle the myth that we can fix it with renewables. In the past I asked the question of would anyone really want to change history if the alternative was living a truely sustainable life. The answer I came up with is although we can not know exactly how good or bad a truely sustainable life could be the answer to the question is probably not because most likely a truely sustainable life would truely suck.
Yes when one considers the vast differences between the previlaged and the exploited and oppressed it is not hard to say that the unsustainable life sucks too, unless you belong to a previlaged group and therefore unsustainable civilzation should be destroyed as soon as possible to limit the amount of exploitation and oppression that is occuring.
Now for the current question. What if there were two intermeditate possibilties. One choice would be to live like the Amish. The other choice would be to live like the Hutterites. The purpose of living one of these two types of life styles would be to increase to lenghth of time that humans get some benifits from resources life coal iron and copper from round about 200 years to say 400 or 800 years. The difference between the two mentioned groups is that the Amish are much more extreme in thier rejection of modernity.
Two things pop in to my head right away when I ask this question. One is Jervons paradox.
I figure anyone reading this is going to know what that is. So let us put that aside as not applicable to the Amish or the Hutterites. (Though I think that it really would apply to the Hutteirties) The second thing is would the sacrifice in surrending possible capabilities be worth the gain of extending the semi industrial age be several centuries.
At some point there is qoing to be a generation that sees that the it is all going to come crashing down on them anyways. But in the mean time if the Amish or Hutterite lifestyle had dominated the globe for those several centuries there would have been a lot less oppression and exploitation. Yet on the other hand life probably would have been much more precarious than it became for the people of North America and Europe in the last half of the 20th century. I doubt that in a world with an Amish mentality that aanti biotics would have ever been developed. Cancer would have never been fought. Rabies never treated, or Maleria ever suppressed. On the third hand I wonder if all of these modern solutions to things that made life precarious in the past has made humans less heroic.
In the past if you sacrificed your life to save others you were probally only losing a decade or two at most anyways. And leaving behind a spouse and children because you kicked the bucket at age 30 or 40 was comon place. So maybe in some ways a less medically advanced world would actually be in some respects a more humane world.
In the end my answer is that a short period of industrial civilzation is better than living like the Amish. But I am not sure what my answer would be if the choice were between living like the Hutterites or like current modern humans.
