“However, the range is from 3.5 °C to 4.8 °C, with the high end being very alarming.” – isn’t anything in that range very alarming and almost certain to permanently reconfigure weather patterns? Not only have we normalised higher and continually rising average temperatures, we are now normalising extreme events so that only historic”extreme events” get to be very alarming any more.
However that’s not going to be enough because we are getting records almost everywhere every year, so the next level of normalisation would have to be … I don’t know what, but it all seems to say a lot about just how evolutionary advantageous it has been to only spend effort on getting through today. Which, might also partly explain why so many climate scientists are unable to accept or admit that their entire life’s work is turning out to have been wrong, and maybe dangerously wrong.
That´s what i thought too, 3.5C is already so extreme, i doubt i could feel the difference between this and 4.8C, it´s all just molten skin and slowly tripping away in your own sweat, piss and shit.
We had 41C on sunday near berlin, i could only stay indoors, all windows darkened out and wearing wet shorts and shirt, that cooled considerably. And eating ice cream, which i barely ever do, i just hate ice cream, except when i have to love it, lol.
Well, that all sounds miserable, me-need-more-brain, apart from the eating ice cream bit, obviously. I’d be happy to have an excuse to indulge in that. 😂
I guess at least Berlin has lots of waterways and some nice, big green spaces like Templehofer Feld and Tiergarten.
George, right. Best case scenario is that this El Nino rivals 1997–98 and 2015–16 in intensity (on top of elevated baseline); worst case is that it surpasses them by a huge margin. We’re heading for a new abnormal.
“ENSO can impose persistent climatic imprints extending well beyond its immediate phase, raising the question of whether its most extreme manifestations — super El Niño events—can trigger Climate Regime Shifts on a global scale.”

“The development lender, which had been under pressure from the Trump administration to abandon the climate lending target adopted during the Biden administration in 2023, said in a statement it would complete a shift to focusing on lending outcomes rather than input goals.”
So before Trump, they were always “failing” to enforce their own climate rules on determining what constitutes climate-related lending and then throwing money at it. After Trump, they’ve abandoned climate-related lending altogether and will just throw money at whatever they want from now on. I am failing to spot any differences in what the World Bank is doing now versus then.

Well said Jupiviv. When I hear people say electing a democrat will get everything back on track, I think of all the years of clean and green wishful thinking, talk, and inaction under their watch and fail to see how any of it – regardless of the party in charge – wasn’t just business as usual.
Yes. An analogy:
Emerald ash borer is taking out all the Fraxinus species in the US right now. That is what they do. It doesn’t matter whether they vote D or R.
Mike don’t give up all hope. There are some ash trees that are genetically different and able to survive. This was a discussion on Permies. The idea of just going in and clearcutting all the ash isn’t recommended. Those that survive will be the base for new forests.
It’s tough to see that there are any financial or political solutions for our systemic predicament. We can tinker with the details here and there but…
