“The latest data for the global surface temperature for December 28 put the planet very close to 1.9°C over the pre-industrial average.
“I expect December 29’s temperature to break 1.9°C. In the graphic below, the y-axis starts at 1.5°C over pre-industrial. Yikes!”

Incredible work this year!
2025 here we come!
Thank you, Doom Wizard. ❤
The last day of the year 2024… what to make of it,
Thanks for your tremendous efforts every day. The posts won’t be ‘better’ next year I’m sure. What I do wish you is that you and your family over there somewhere on that island on the ocean’s border have a healthy year without too much adversity. Too bad you are having such lousy weather. The past few weeks here have been wonderful and sunny. I took long walks through the mountains of the Ardeche in an area without people. Sometimes with beautiful views of the Alps and encounters with deer and roe deer. The silence the light and nature always offers a little counterbalance to the daily misery.
We are going to see it in 2025….
Thank you, Zip, and you are welcome.
I wish I had time to do a retrospective of 2024. From a climate standpoint, it was the year when El Nino + natural variability absolutely ruled themselves out as the sole drivers of these alarmingly elevated temps. 2022, which admittedly was a La Nina year, was 1.16C above IPCC pre-industrial. 2024 is around 1.6C. It’s mind-blowing.
Geopolitically, the very rapid overthrow of Assad was probably the story that surprised me most, although I naturally had a general expectation of upheaval.
Well some html works but not the img src I tried to post above.

Can only use the link
Edward, it looked like a couple of your test comments came through on the 18th December thread. I’m not actually sure if this version of WordPress will allow images in the comments section or how you would go about doing that.
Re your linked image, I guess, glass half-full, we’re fortunate to have made it to 2025 at all. I know that seemed unlikely to me when I first went down the doomer rabbit hole. Once you see the inherent unsustainability of modern industrial civilisation, and our financial system in particular, it seems amazing that it keeps on levitating.
One last headline to end the year (from my own head): In what may be the last Year of the NOAA’S existence, today’s CO2 reading officially verifies the acceleration of CO2’s atmospheric accumulation:
Week beginning on December 22, 2024: 425.59 ppm
Weekly value from 1 year ago: 421.75 ppm
Weekly value from 10 years ago: 399.08 ppm
Last updated: December 31
10 years ago, in 2015, the decadal difference was 2.5 ppm’s, as you can see from above, this year’s increase was 3.84 ppm’s (today’s reading is 425.72) above a year ago.
Pan’s posting of the ferry story is Illustrative of my thesis that every and any thing the Corporatocracy sells the public as Green, only makes the climate crisis worse: I have yet, after more than a decade, found a single exception to this basic principle. Yet, what I consider a reasonable and even obvious fact, that capitalism is the CAUSE of climate derangement, not its solution, is simply never discussed.
‘Like The Knights who Say “Ni”, Corporations merely need to demand you “Bring me some Greenery” (and make it pretty … and not too expensive) and any sleight of hand is accepted, even though the net result is the creation of an even more ponderous load of CO2 being vented into the atmosphere.”

Rob, Islay is likewise soon to get a brand new ferry (it was supposed to happen this year but has been pushed back to 2025). Ours won’t be LNG though and will even feature charging points for EV’s, so I will sleep easy at night after crossings, knowing that I have done my bit to save the planet. 😁
“MV Isle Of Islay will incorporate a hybrid diesel-electric powertrain, including a 1MWh battery pack supplied by Leclanché and four Wärtsilä 6L20 gensets, rated 1,600kW apiece.”

Also, ni!
Happy new year, good luck all
And, to you, Mad Hatter!
Happy new year all in case I haven’t said it already. My only positive take-away from these headlines is that I initially forgot Indonesia was in the southern hemisphere. 37 degrees is high even for summer but at least lower than what places like S Asia and S America have been getting.
Happy New Year, Jupiviv. Let’s hope we can all keep muddling through.
