“Warming depletes Arctic soil’s nitrogen stores, irreversibly increasing CO₂ emissions… [Arctic sea-ice extent still at record low for the date per JAXA]
“”We already knew that climate change was causing Arctic soils to release more CO₂, but we thought at least some of the emissions would be offset by plant growth, which increases slightly with warming,” says Marañón. “But our study shows that this isn’t the case. Nitrogen is lost and soil fertility decreases, preventing Arctic ecosystems from offsetting microbial CO₂ emissions.””

You can read the previous “Climate” thread here. I’ll be back tomorrow with an “Economic” thread.

At what point do the inhabitants of the northern shores and islands of the Mediterranean realise that, as correctly predicted by the models, climate change is leading to desertification, desertification means turning into a desert, deserts don’t have trees, the way trees are lost is through drought and wildfires, there is no escape from this. By the last article probably not for some time yet.
George, I guess it takes a lot before people will give up on their ancestral homelands and turn climate refugee. For now, they are doing their best to adapt, like these Almerian farmers trying to combat creeping desertification with soil regeneration:

“As expected (see June 2017), after two years that averaged +1.60 °C, June 2025 was ‘only’ +1.30 °C above pre-industrial.”
Finally some good news… uhhhh sort of? Anyway, let’s hope it lasts longer than the likes of us expect!
I have maintained since the days that I frequently posted on Michigan Professor Juan Cole’s website that La Ninas do not cool the planet. They just store the heat somewhere that it does not get measured. Therefore the 1.3° claim is an illusion.
Any layman should be able to understand that let alone an expert. Therefore the so called experts should have been figuring out how to properly measure the heat not let the masses toy with the idea that the planet is even termporarily cooling.
Curt and Jupiviv, who knows what happens next… Global heat anomalies tend to be less pronounced during the NH summer months but, even so, we have just seen temps drop way down to not much above 1C. The forecast is for them to ping rapidly back up again, though.
Global sea temps are still third highest on record and way above anything preceding the crazy spikes of 2023 and 2024. Meanwhile, as reported in the previous thread, temps over land were record high from Jan through May, and obviously we are still seeing lots of local heat records fall.
This looks interesting:

RIP, Michael Ruppert and thank you for Abby Martin’s movie trailer, Edward.
Boogeymen don’t get much more abominable than the US military-industrial complex – worse even than Big Oil(!) – so I’m sure she’ll find plenty of sympathetic viewers. I’m kind of over the blame-game, though, however deserving the targets, and prepared to admit my own complicity in our mess.
Oh

At least today’s thread didn’t feature any crazy people from The Cato Institute, Cassandra. 😂
I was actually a little curious about them and did some digging. They’ve recently changed their stance on climate change from pretty barefaced denial to peddling the line that human ingenuity and free markets are all that’s needed to dig us out of our mess. This from 2019:
“The Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., quietly shut down a program that for years sought to raise uncertainty about climate science, leaving the libertarian think tank co-founded by Charles Koch without an office dedicated to global warming.”
https://www.science.org/content/article/us-think-tank-shuts-down-prominent-center-challenged-climate-science
That’s amazing.
Like a German deli using the barter system, things have taken a tern for the wurst.
Hydro and nuclear are supposedly green, but both can easily become stranded assets, which negates any carbon credits they may be given.
The pic of the nuclear reactors spewing steam reminds me that everyone accepting nuclear as “green” conveniently dismisses the fact that water vapor is a powerful greenhouse gas; although it doesn’t last for centuries, the building of enough nuclear reactors to actually make a difference in CO2 emissions would simply fast forward climate change, like every other purported “solution” that pours tons of CO2 into the troposphere before a single molecule can be kept out of it.
Altho it’s become quite apparent that Jevon’s paradox has been more than proven during the 1‘st quarter of this 21’st century alone, the chimera of thermodynamic miracles remains firmly rooted enough that any scheme the corporate sphere concocts will continue to garnish public support and funding, even as they exacerbate the problem they we’re supposedly designed to solve for the simple reason that the primary impetus for any solution that is proposed at all is to make profits for the investors.
The trollop in the Whitehouse knows what the Trollope of “The Way We Live Now” knew: just as the financiers of the US Railroads had their profits in hand well before the first track was laid, their modern-day equivalents enjoy, via perfectly legal financial legerdemain, the same privilege. Hence, should their green machines not function as advertised, (which they won’t , ‘cause they can’t) it is the public, not their bottom lines, that suffer.
“…conveniently dismisses the fact that water vapor is a powerful greenhouse gas.”
Rob, this type of emissions from nuclear power plants had never occurred to me. I’m sure you’re right and that the construction of scores more plants + uranium mining, and fuel processing, along with the water vapour, would cause non-trivial emissions.
I must admit, though, that it is the post-collapse ramifications of our dalliance with nuclear power that concerns me most.

Thanks for this, Heather. I’ve been relieved to spot quite a few bees in my very unkempt garden this year. Long may that continue!
A couple days ago I was walking in a parking lot. One side of the parking lot was lined by a hedge about 4 feet hight and perhaps 70 meters long. The hedge was covered with Yellow flowers. I decided to walk along the hedge and count the bees. I counted 3 bees on the flowers along the hedge.
I took a picture of the hedge. I just looked at it and I failed to consider something else the dedge was about 30 inces wide on top and the top was covered in flowers. And there was an electical charger in the picture that allows me to say that the hedge is more likely 5 foot high. There must have been at least 5000 flowers there, and only 3 bees for those 5 thousand llowers.
If we are lucky there were only 3 bees because maybe in bee culture these flowers do not turn bees on like maybe roses and lavender does.
Some types of hydrangeas and forsythias are not very appealing to bees. Sometimes see them as a hedge.
Roses are plural and lavender is singular but roses and lavender together are plural so I should have written do not does. I hope that I do not get stung for that mistake.
Not worth any stings, in my opinion! I appreciate your comments and on the ground reporting,
I never make written mistakes,it’s all poetic lyscents. I learned denial from the “It’s not my fault!” species.
Who cares about NTHE? I’m sick of all the doomers. Everything’s great, The Big Beautiful Bill passed. That’s today’s lesson about majority rule.
Is that working out as well as unregulated free market capitalism, tariffs & 1.5C?
