Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
A tempting proposition indeed, Bob. Who could resist?
In all seriousness, I marvel at the brutal drudgery endured by so many around the world. How on earth do they do it? I wouldn’t last a day mining sand on a Malawian beach.
They keep saying this is survivable and we can adapt right. I still believe in Santa clause and the easter bunny too!

Regarding the link above about the mycotoxins in our food supply, a brief quote from the article says it all:
“People are exposed to these toxins by eating contaminated food (particularly grains and cereals, and products which contain them like bread or pasta). Washing and cooking these foods does not necessarily remove the mycotoxins. This is especially a problem since some of the fungi that produce mycotoxins are not visible, or detectable by smell or taste. Another route of exposure is through drinking water contaminated by agricultural runoff. Inhalation and absorption through the skin are other potential exposure routes, for people working with the crops or the food which has been affected.”

[ME] I would imagine that Pres. Elon & Trump’s funding cutbacks to the NOAA & FDA & CDC & USDA & NIH will pretty much curtail any research & prevention here in the USA. The chance for later research & prevention will not be possible when we reach a certain point on the Carbon Pulse downslope.

Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
Bob, Google is telling me that in the 1940’s as many as 100,000 Russians died of “alimentary toxic aleukia” from consuming foods contaminated with mycotoxins, so these fungi have form.
Is it just me, Pan, or is that last entry just too ironic? I guess the name can now be changed to the more accurate COPOUT30 with their blessing.
Lately there seems to be a flurry of energy discoveries, akin to cold fusion , showing up in news feeds, as though they will solve all of humanity’s problems. Yet we are currently generating more energy than at any time in history: it is not the lack of energy, but the uses to which we put it that seems to be the biggest problem.
During the three decades of COP junkets, mankind has used its enormous energy-generating capacity to:
Build giggle factories on numerous continents to manufacture vehicles for which there were few to no charging facilities;
Trillions of $, which are generated by burning fossil fuel, to expand the production of Weapons of Mass Destruction after having started wars in order to destroy Weapons of Mass Destruction;
Built enough petrochemical plant capacity to enable us to wrap the globe in plastic several times over;
Concocted a pseudo-currency to facilitate the commitment of international crimes that requires so much energy, it is equivalent to the emissions of the sprawling US defense industry;
Developed AI to make flying taxis and other vehicles for the fun and pleasure of the ultra rich, technologies so energy-intensive it is necessary to build entirely new data centers to handle the loads, as well as firing up mothballed coal-fired power plants to feed them;
But the number 1 change that has taken place since the start of the COP has been in the amount of energy required, and therefore emissions generated, to discover, transport, transmit, and produce additional energy to then squander on producing such things as “green” vehicles that weigh twice as much as the average weight of the vehicles (and therefore require twice the energy to propel them) as those being built before a single COP took place.
As peak oil caused an energy transition away from burning it to using it for purposes for which there is no substitute, perhaps a similar transition needs to be launched to do the same for energy use.
But I’m sure that would be “expecting too much.”
I think you are right, Rob, and if you need any further confirmation for these views, I think Jean-Baptiste Fressoz in his new book, and in his recent Planet:Critical podcast with Rachel Donald, provides the necessary overview.
I still say the use of the royal “we” erases the extremely real and important divide between the corporate owners of global power and the non-owners. Corporations were the perfect ultrasocial means to facilitate all those actions you enumerated, and they are now frantically aiming to usurp any effective regulation from the various political systems that are mostly supine to them.
Nothing will stop them from the outside- they are a collective that infects all social institutions.
So it’s a 1.5 C world now, and then will come a 2C world, and then a 3C world, most likely in our lifetimes. Collapse is in those numbers and in that guaranteed, unavoidable future, though not according to any precise year-by-year timetable.
Life will continue, but death will be more and more its equal – a nice consolation for such a stupid species.
Here we go, as Jon Brion sang:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWjkAJ-Kkok
Martin, that is a new name to me. He sounds like my kind of analyst:
“Jean-Baptiste Fressoz is a French historian specializing in environmental history, technology, and the Anthropocene, currently a researcher at the CNRS (Alexandre Koyré Center of the EHESS) in Paris. He’s known for his work on the history of technological risk and climate change, including the book “More and More and More: An All-Consuming History of Energy.” [AI overview]
I need to check out that Punch-Drunk Love movie. I’d forgotten it existed. Jon Brion’s wistful song made me think of Aimee Mann’s equally wistful “Wise Up” from the Magnolia soundtrack.
“No, it’s not going to stop
‘Til you wise up”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec8SJqGd6o0
I can’t believe that you recommended a book I have on order! How cool is that!?
Well done, Rob! Upvote from me! Kudos, COPOUT is sooooo correct!
“I guess the name can now be changed to the more accurate COPOUT30 with their blessing.”
Rob, here’s an idea – if even the people running these annual absurdities are prepared to admit that, in themselves, they don’t achieve much, then how about not flying 50,000+ people from around the planet to the Brazilian jungle to attend?
“The world expects too much from the annual COP climate summits, said the CEO of COP30 to be held in Brazil this November, stressing the importance of implementing climate action all year round…”
In other words, the owning and decision-making classes are not going to fix anything but the spectacle of pretending to do so will continue – on their terms, in a way which serves their short-term interests while making them look good at the same time.
Moral of the story – collapse will not only be extremely terrifying, but also extremely annoying. Presidents, finance ministers and climate secretaries will be telling us mistakes have been made but solutions are at hand while we queue for locust ramen.
“The world expects too much from the annual COP climate summits.”
Jupiviv, the world would be incredibly stupid to expect anything at all from COP30 since the previous 29 have achieved zip vis-à-vis reducing emissions on a global basis – the only basis that matters.
If only our political elites were smart enough to have protein-rich fare ready to hand out. I get the impression that resilience/preparedness experts like David Korowicz are banging their heads against a brick wall trying to get policy-makers to listen.
The world is continuing to party-on with the one-time Carbon Pulse of ancient sunlight {FFs}. So, have any readers given much thought to ‘what comes next’? My pitiful two cents:
Once FFs & minerals are largely kaput, what will be the best way to mitigate & adapt to the horrendous results of weather whiplash? IMO, the future Kings and feudal lords should seek to keep any rainfall from running back to the ever-rising seas. Afterall, Water is first and everything.
“A Great Leap Forward” of massive canals and incredible numbers of runoff holding ponds will collect the moisture to very slowly replenish the aquifers and provide irrigation for crops & drinking. The fact that these will be hand-dug and also result in mind-boggling numbers of deaths, [which was absolutely of no concern for Mao Tse Tung in the very recent past], therefore our future Overlords can have clear consciences to have billions of us manually digging and hand tending crops.

Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
Digging a canal by hand, Bob… another enticing offer. You should set up a recruitment agency for masochists.
Hello Pan,
The amazing thing is that the peasants did this for nearly three millennia [fifth century BC to now!]. You would think that in 2,600 years that someone, anyone, would have thought about Overshoot & Collapse, then spread it to the masses, then they could have revolted, then finally shrunk to carrying capacity. Nope, just like yeast: they ate all they could, massively reproduced, then died in great numbers. Just following their genetic programming instead of really thinking outside the box.
That famous lone guy standing in front of the long line of tanks probably knew what needed to be done, but with no multi-billion Chinese to back him up…. well, it was a waste of time.
Same thing nowadays among those well-informed by their education: Malthus said it all back in 1783 so 2025-1783 = 242 years of us going the wrong direction but now supercharged with FFs.
It is easier for us to willingly dig our own graves, than to really think, then sacrifice everything to live in harmony with Nature.
But I am willing to see 8+ billion prove me wrong.
Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
There may well have been people who thought deeply and clearly about overshoot and collapse, they would inevitably have had less descendants than those who didn’t think like that and hence such genetic or cultural evolved behaviour can never be present in more than a small fraction of the population, and will never be the dominant mode except in certain circumstances where populations are permanently restricted by resource availability..
I believe Bangladesh or Pakistan or one of those countries with huge river deltas.. is halfway through such a long-term project, starting back in the 90s as flood mitigation works… Working little by little, locally village by village over several generations… Digging run off channels & holding ponds, and levees, and moving settlements farther back from the increasingly wide flood plains.
Late post for today. Hope readers see it this weekend.
Discovery of Immense Methane Leaks in Antarctica by Robert Hunziker
Thank you, Edward. His final para starts:
“The climate system is not going to ring a bell before all hell breaks loose. It’ll happen out of the blue, temperatures relentlessly climbing month by month by month to intolerable levels, possibly already started, observed by Copernicus as stated above.”
Thanks, Edward. Great link. I always appreciate Hunziker’s articles. This must have been quite a sight:
“Additionally, according to an article in Rapusia.org, March 14, 2025, “Massive Methane Leaks Detected in Antarctica, Posing Serious Climate Risks”: “A team aboard the Sarmiento de Gamboa research vessel observed large columns of gas escaping from the ocean floor, with some extending up to 700 meters (2,300 feet) long and 70 meters (230 feet) wide.””
Upvotes for all from me. Kudos to Edward for discovery of the link.
Kali, consider this: if a ship accidently sails into one of those supergiant methane bubble baths, and if the billions of bubbles are close together, the resultant loss of density will instantly sink that ship. On the other hand, don’t accidently ignite that supercloud of methane bursting forth from the seawaters and mixing with the air.
