You can read the previous “Climate” thread here. I’ll be back tomorrow with an “Economic” thread.

You include biodiversity loss in the climate section (e.g. a couple of stories on Tuesday) but really climate change is not yet a large cause (though coming up fast), rather it is what E. O. Wilson called HIPPO: Habitat loss (mostly due to agriculture), Invasive species, Pollution (including insecticides, herbicides and climate change), (human) Population pressure (really the ultimate cause for each predicament) and Over-exploitation (hunting, fishing, tourism).
Any and all attempts at addressing climate change without acknowledging that it is really a symptom of massive overshoot (i.e. the Rockstrom panglossian approach) will inevitably make all these other problems worse and accelerate the infringement of other planetary boundaries.
Climate change is arguably the easiest of the planetary boundary transgressions for which apparent solutions can be proposed (though none have worked or will ever actually work in the way their proponents fantasise) while biodiversity loss is the most difficult, which is probably why almost none are ever reported (wavy arms and motherhood statements about protected species and zones don’t really work when faced with growing human population pressures and greedy mouths).
Anything under the sun is “easy to propose.”
But since there are no solutions to the human predicament, there are no mechanisms for the implementation of any proposal to “address” any fantasy of a planetary boundary retreat – including the tedious one of Overpopulation. The yeast in Catton’s vat multiplied; so did we.
“biodiversity loss is the most difficult, which is probably why almost none are ever reported…”
George, I think also that, bar the odd die-off, as we saw with the Alaskan Snow Crabs, for example, biodiversity loss does not yield the dramatic headlines that extreme weather events do. And the cost to humans is not immediately evident enough for our anthropocentric media.
I would agree with Martin that even an honest appraisal of our multi-faceted predicament would not yield much in the way of solutions. Building in some personal, possibly local, resilience – be that psychological, spiritual, practical or material – is probably the best we can do.
The Peak Oil Philosophy Of Michael Ruppert Confronting Collapse Full Book Review
Ruppert was one of the earliest Peak Oil Philosophers despite the fact that he himself did not exactly consider himself to be one. Confronting Collapse is essential reading for anti-technological and Peak Oil thinkers and Ruppert is one of the most underrated philosophers of our era

Reminder of the hurdles we created by our being a little crazy in our oil guzzling..
Remarkable lineup today, Justin. I was forced to watch a bit of the vice Presidential debate and climate Change was brought up…the exchange centered on wether or not to manufacture solar panels here or China…Vance stressed that point..oh well same old song and dance
Thank you, Vince.
RIP, Michael Ruppert. I got to know him just a little through Facebook. He popped into my head the other day when I heard this Lily Allen track, which I recalled was a favourite of his (NSFW):

Everything turning into a shit show. Hurricane recovery hampered by port strike add in us empire decline and collapse of Ukraine and Israel. Then add in resources are limited and stretched thin and now appears capitalism is eats its self along with the corruption rottening the system from within.
I just watched a clip of Joe Biden temporizing about a possible Israeli strike on Iranian oil facilities. It would seem a very unwise course of action, not least for the US government itself because it would lift oil prices with an election looming!
“The price of oil has jumped 5% after US President Joe Biden said the US was discussing possible strikes by Israel on Iran’s oil industry.”
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx250ygn9ddo
US-UK-IS Triad have been itching for a war against Iran forever. All year the US has been politely saying to Izzy ‘Please Don’t do this, don’t do that, don’t invade Rafah, don’t invade Lebanon, don’t block aid, don’t strike Iran’s nuclear facilities….’
Which is Code for “Do it!” 🙂
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWGFQKDdEiM
I see it as a facade, a pretence of ‘plausible deniability’ if/when it goes south.
And it makes the folks back home feel more calm & comfy.
Like all the ceasefire negotiations, just Kibuki theatre, and the US can say “See? We ARE Trying!”
The oil prices are going up just because the region is unstable – they don’t care, US is close to self-sufficient, along with having all the South American oilfields in their backyard.
Besides which, Iran beat them to it – they said we’ve retaliated for Israel’s crimes against us, and QUOTE “We are done” in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.
But if Israel retaliates again – then all restraints are off. And if the US gets involved, that means other US-allied countries oil fields and the illegal US Occupation bases in the region will become legitimate targets. Iran-Saudi foreign ministers’ meeting the other day, lots of hugs & friendliness.. hmmm.. trying to drive those two apart doesn’t seem to be working..
Interesting that the GCC (usually US Allies, aka “Loyal Royals”) have declared Neutrality, which under international law, means the US cant use their military bases in neutral countries to strike Iran, but we all know they will anyway 🙂
Rain, thank you for your thoughts. Your Aussie timing means that I am often asleep when you comment. My focus when I get up is then on cracking out the new thread before work, which means that your comments sometimes get a bit lost in the mix – but they are appreciated.
The US is not really close to self-sufficient in oil, although it is a huge producer, primarily of light oil. It still imports about 40% of the oil it needs, for reasons both financial and practical. Gas/Petrol prices have historically had an outsized impact on US voting behaviour, so if the US government doesn’t care then they probably should!
I imagine that the US will be trying to discourage Israel from striking Iranian oil infrastructure. Certainly, they repeatedly asked Ukraine to stop its drone-strikes on Russian oil infrastructure earlier this year.
“How the economics of oil could sway the US presidential election… pump prices are a significant factor influencing voters. Research has even shown that gasoline prices have an “outsized effect” on inflation expectations and consumer sentiment. As fuel prices go up, confidence in the economy goes down.”
https://theconversation.com/how-the-economics-of-oil-could-sway-the-us-presidential-election-232956
I always enjoy all the brilliant articles that talk 360 degrees around the reason we got here. At this point it doesn’t matter, because it just might be “Too late.”
Continuing to increase the population doesn’t seem to be the best “Concept”. And it doesn’t change “Too late.” Breeders & deniers will be going off the same cliff with the few critical thinkers. I’ve never had any problem with a vasectomies. But it’s sad that sperm didn’t have a chance to spread it’s absolute destructive power into the habitat.
What’s this money supply the damn fools talk about? 😉
From yesterday – “Global money supply has skyrocketed by $7.3 trillion over the last year.” “..new record of a MASSIVE $89.7 trillion.”
What kind of mental disease makes monkey minds think that anything besides currency is money? If everything is valued in currency how can the total value of everything be worth more than the total currency.
I believe it’s time for this phrase: Fucking idiots.
I see I have to apologize again. Crypto is money too? FMTT! This messenger doesn’t have the constitution for suicide. 😉
