We’re beyond hopeless.
Sure they will, they will save a lot of money, especially on such trivial items, like cloths and food perhaps…Curt, I know your comment was in jest.
Yesterday, I posted a clip of author, Henry Miller in the movie Reds about paranoia during the red scare during the life of John Reed, “Ten Days that Shook the World” .
So, in another, Miller is here in a 2 minute clip reflecting on his early upbringing as a child in New York City. Warning he uses the same language to describe it as Donald Trump did with so called Third World Countries.
Very New Yorker… reminisces the conditions before cars , television sets,
and probably telephones, hot water and electricity for the jobless poor.
He stated he still has sleepless nights because of it…starvation will do that to a person it seems..
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf4Vma9O9Xk
RIP, Henry Miller, too bad I had born 50 years too late, and going to die another 50 years too early as they say….I would have made an exceptional radical Socialist, now a days it has gotten to be a taboo. Wonder why?
Sounds like Henry really, really hated NY – but apparently loved Big Sur, California, where he lived out his days.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1fGNCvZL_w
More like he hated his destitution existence in New York as a youth…being penniless and hungry must be a real horror.
My favorite read on that is George Orwell’s account of his days “Down and Out in Paris and London”.
https://www.litcharts.com/lit/down-and-out-in-paris-and-london/themes/poverty-as-prison
As a consequence, the poor often while away entire days in a starvation-induced fog—too tired, depressed, and weak to meaningfully improve their situation. The hungry have only enough motivation to either finish their day’s work or make it to the next homeless shelter for the night. So, while the wealthy often denigrate the poor as lazy, Orwell shows how poverty has reduced the poor to physical and mental weakness that the wealthy can’t understand. That weakness often culminates in a loss of humanity, which Orwell witnesses both in the hotels of Paris and the lodging houses and spikes of London. Wherever Orwell goes, he witnesses men fighting, usually over petty things: perceived insults, minor theft. The real cause, however, is hunger. In hotel and restaurant kitchens, in casual wards and at the Salvation Army, in muddy fields and meadows, men battle each other because their tempers are short. Malnutrition has perverted their natures and left them unable to connect on the human level.
I’m certain even Big Sur would be a bummer under similar conditions…
😞
A couple of positive benifits of the collapse of industrial civilization. Think of the money that your children will save, if they are still alive, because it will no longer be neccessary to pay for funeral expenses. Based upon past disasters those who die will either be buried in mass graves, burned alive, or not be buried at all but get eaten by scavangers.
In addition I do not think that anyone will care if you do not pay your inheritance taxes.
“A couple of positive benefits of the collapse of industrial civilization.”
Curt, some commentators in the doomosphere certainly think there will be an upside to collapse. Jim Kunstler has a rather romanticised, bucolic vision of it, for example, and Gail Tverberg, in the conclusion of her latest analysis, seems to envision a collapse-lite scenario.
Obviously, the crumbs of comfort you are offering are meagre indeed. 😅
Well, I still live in NY but I moved out of the “lake effect” snow area after I retired. We haven’t had any significant snow in the area of NY I live now. It was 5F during my walk this morning; clear sky, no wind, full moon, beautiful. It’s supposed to be in the 40s again by mid-week.
I know Buffalo and Rochester are getting a lot of lake effect snow – I moved away from Rochester after I retired. As of yesterday, I saw Rochester has had 48″+ of snow so far this season. I don’t miss it. I don’t mind the cold but shoveling snow gets old fast.
Ed, just saw this about your State,
New York State’s Coming Energy Crisis
https://www.nationalreview.com/2024/12/new-york-states-coming-energy-crisis/amp/
By Jon Pepper
December 14, 2024 6:30 AM
Conditions were especially dangerous in New York, which depends on natural gas to generate the largest share of its electricity and to provide home heating and cooking to more than a million customers. Frozen wellheads on pipelines that provide natural gas to the city suffered a rapid drop in pressure that threatened to collapse the system.
Modest improvements to the state’s gas infrastructure have been made in the two years since, largely in the areas of coordination and communications between power entities, but the risk of a severe supply disruption remains. In its “winter readiness assessment” issued last month, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) warned that operators are “likely to be challenged in maintaining sufficient reserves during periods of extreme cold weather.”
Oh my….
The nation’s climate press routinely reports on environmental catastrophes that it imagines decades away, but a potential disaster in its immediate future has eluded its notice. The public has heard crickets, which according to one worrying report could be chirping faster than ever because of rising temperatures from global warming. Climate reporters spilled far more ink on the misguided prediction that hurricane season in 2024 would bring an unprecedented 33 named storms to the North Atlantic, creating the “busiest hurricane season on record.” The season ended with 17.
It’s the National Review after all….
Even so, it is a fossil fuel — natural gas — that is by far the state’s biggest source of electrical generation, providing ten times more power (35.8 percent) than wind and solar combined (3.6 percent), according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. That’s particularly important during the winter, which has already dumped several feet of snow upstate this year.
While the climate alarmists frame their scariest predictions on a warming earth, it is colder weather that is the larger threat to human safety.
Danger, Danger..Will Robinson…
Interesting article, thanks. My thoughts…
Yeah, well, ummm, it’s been pretty mild overall this winter. Last winter was really mild because I walked outside every day last winter. I haven’t missed a day outside walking since early 2023. Even with climate change there will be cold snaps. People continue to confuse the difference between weather and climate.
“While the climate alarmists frame their scariest predictions on a warming earth, it is colder weather that is the larger threat to human safety. ”
— Right. Again, climate/weather not the same.
I just checked my past calendars (I keep them because I log my walking miles daily) and the last time I didn’t walk outside was 3/17/2023. Rain, wind, cold, snow, doesn’t matter – I walk outside because I hate the treadmill 😒 more than nasty weather. Overall, the weather is mild here in the Northeastern US.

Thank you, Edward. I did spot that but the connection with climate change or other anthropogenic influence was too unclear for me to feel confident in including it.
Yeah, as it says, it broke loose in 1986. I just thought it was interesting but it has no real climate impact at this point; just a possible hazard for ships.
I bet that sometime between 2030 and 2040 if not even sooner those people who are on death Roe in the United States will be living longer than a lot of us as the government will have to keep them alive until the execution date.
Well that prediction does depend upon the assumption that in the United States maintianing the prison system will be a very high priority. Probably not the top priority but in the top 10.
Just got here. Immediately scrolled down to comments & skipped all of them. I can’t believe that everyone is not singularly focused on all the reports of unidentified drones around the world. Are they advanced tech military drones from other countries, alien craft from other worlds or beings that live in the depths of the oceans & have been here longer than the Clever Ape? All of this trumps the continuing destruction of the only habitat we can survive in. At least I know what’s important. The messenger needs to commit suicide. Can someone loan me a guillotine? I don’t know much that I can’t find a reason to laugh about, when this howler monkey species decides to open it’s mouth.
As an aside: Bigfooties exist to our senses but are actually configurations of shape shifters. Anyone that tries to capture a pic or video cause them to appear fuzzy. That’s why we have no clear images & have failed to find any physical evidence.
How about a challenge? Try & top this bullshit. 😉
Actually, I’m controlling all the drones from my basement. I thought I stir up a little distraction. Personally, I think it’s a US military Psyop drill. I’m not a believer in UFOs being from other worlds or “extraterrestrial” origin which usually gets a lot of backlash from true believers. I see a lot of UFOs myself as I spend a lot of time outside and have poor vision. How come camera resolution has continued to improve but UFO videos are still blurred?
I actually had a bigfoot sighting last year (or maybe two years ago). I was on the trail and just said, “hello, good morning” and continued on my way. Haven’t see him/her since.
😉
“Actually, I’m controlling all the drones from my basement.”
I suspected as much. 🤨
Just read the quotes from each link. This species thinks what’s happening is a game. To their dismay they may find that messing with mother nature can end them up in a full contact fight with global warming. Looks like it will take several punches to the face to get their attention, after it’s to late to offer an offense.
Lay there unconscious & bleed. There will be no rematch. NTHE standing in the ring & asking: Where are all my know it all, egotistical opponents? NTHE will hold the Championship Belt for eternity.
Scientists share concerns over phenomenon observed in Antarctica: ‘It’s bonkers’
“I think it is still too soon to say for sure, … but if it were to be the case, this is what it would look like.”
by Mike TaylorDecember 14, 2024
“I think it is still too soon to say for sure, … but if it were to be the case, this is what it would look like.”
The latest measurement of Antarctic sea ice shocked scientists, though it’s not certain whether this is a new normal.
What’s happening?
The National Snow and Ice Data Center reported this year’s Antarctic sea ice winter maximum was the second-lowest on record, per the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The area around Antarctica covered by at least 15% ice was 6.6 million square miles. Last year marked the only time when there was less ice coverage.
The average maximum extent from 1981 to 2010 was 598,000 square miles greater. And there was only 77,000 square miles more ice this year than there was in 2023. It continues a nearly decade-long trend, but these last two years have been outliers even then.
“Like 2023, the 2024 winter maximum was so far outside the range of observed variability that some scientists speculate that the Southern Ocean sea ice may have entered a wholly new state,” the NOAA stated.
The extent of sea ice from 2013 to 2015 was mostly above average.
Why is this important?
Research scientist Ted Scambos told the NOAA this is the result of slow ice advance in fall and “rapid retreat” in spring and summer. While rising air temperatures are an obvious factor to point to, they can’t fully explain the sheer scale of the change.
Scambos said the problem is most likely attributable to “warm near-surface ocean temperatures at the sea ice edge.” These temperatures, from 55 degrees Fahrenheit to 65, are even more likely to be the cause of “the slow readvance in autumn and winter.”
“It’s bonkers,” Scambos said of the back-to-back winter maximum lows. “It’s like it’s wandering off into new territory.”
The yearly average ice extent around Antarctica peaked in 2014 after decades of increases. But by 2018, 35 years’ worth of gains had disappeared. While Antarctic sea ice is volatile, and a 2022 model showed high-low swings as well as short-term increases and decreases, the last two years “are in a world of their own,” according to the NOAA.

National Snow and Ice Data Center sea ice expert Walt Meier said weather could reverse this pattern but added a warning.
“I think it is still too soon to say for sure that we’re witnessing global warming coming to Antarctic sea ice,” he said, “but if it were to be the case, this is what it would look like.”
What’s being done about the rising global temperature?
The loss of Antarctic sea ice coincides with a trend of the rapidly rising global temperature. Earth’s 10 hottest surface temperatures on record have come in each of the last 10 years, a transformation driven by the burning of dirty sources of energy such as coal and gas, which devastates human health as well as wildlife and the environment.
To help the planet cool down, we can make changes from washing clothes in cold water to installing a heat pump. Cutting down on plastic is another key, while talking to friends and family can boost your impact and clear the path to solution-oriented action.
See TR..wash in cold water buddy and pee in a bottle too…
PS these guys aren’t too certain….

I would chose “Never’ because there is no need to be concerned about any situation after it’s to late to do anything. I’m wondering how big the ice cube will be that breaks off the Thwaites glacier.
How will the Trump Administration & the right wing MAGA Congress handle global warming in the next four years? The Democrats should be thankful they lost. A economic downturn, recession or depression topped by worse weather weirding is not an ideal situation for a party in power. Those in charge in other countries face the same problems. I’ve got a feeling that Rep/Cons will wish they had lost. Whatever, the future might be even more entertaining.
If I get any older, I may have to pee in Depends. 😉
This is my partial take on drones. Drones are used not only by the military for reccon and to attack enemy forces and to occassionally deliver some small supplies but they are used for communications as well. The drones do not send communciations by radio signals they send them by lasers. In essence the drones send a message through a drone relay system from one place to another. The advantage is that there is no radio signal that eminates out that could be intercepted and also no radio signal emminating from a known location. I imagine that someone could intercept the laser signal if they are in the right place at the right time with the right equipement. But that wuold happen less often than by convential radio signals.
I just tried to post this and I am not sure that it went trough due to conectivity problems. I will try again if it comes through a second time delet this one.
Interesting.
I have pretty much ignored drones.
Any connection with microwave research?
“On the military front, Chinese researchers are making strides in developing high-powered microwave (HPM) weapons. These systems utilize focused microwave beams to disrupt electronic components of enemy systems, including radar and communication infrastructures. The potential applications for these weapons include military exercises and technology verification.”
I ask AI about lasers and this was the response – the downside:
Line-of-Sight Requirement: Laser communication requires a clear line of sight between transmitter and receiver; any obstruction can disrupt the signal.
Environmental Factors: Weather conditions such as fog or rain can significantly impact laser transmission quality.
Cost and Complexity: Implementing laser communication systems can be more complex and costly compared to traditional RF systems.
Drone swarms around military bases are nothing new. I remember I saw a drone swarm around the British Airbase in Moenchengladback around 2010. Drones are much more common now. I suspect that there are a lot of training exercises going on to prepare for war or to at least make it appear that preperations for war are being undertaken.
Dozens of luxury condos, hotels in Miami sinking at ‘unexpected’ rates, new study reveals

buildings in northern and central Sunny Isles affected, research by the University of Miami found.
The study, published Friday night, identified a total of 35 buildings that have sunk by as much as three inches between 2016 and 2023, including the iconic Surf Club Towers and Faena Hotel, the Porsche Design Tower, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Trump Tower III and Trump International Beach Resorts. Together, the high rises accommodate tens of thousands of residents and tourists. Some have more than 300 units, including penthouses that cost millions of dollars.
Preliminary data also shows signs that buildings in downtown Miami, Brickell, and along Broward and Palm Beach coasts are sinking, too. Globally, similar subsidence within such a large area has never been reported, the university said in a statement.
What was surprising is that it was there at all. So we didn’t believe it at the beginning,” Amelung said, explaining that his team checked several sources that confirmed the initial data. “And then we thought, we have to investigate it,” he said.
…There’s no sign that it’s stopping,” Amelung said of the settlement.
this could be a sign that rising sea levels, caused by the continued emission of greenhouse gases, is accelerating the erosion of the limestone on which South Florida is built.
