People are having kittens because of the bad consequences that the monster El Nino is going to cause, but a bigger, and seemingly unconsidered, concern is what it represents. Its manifestation is so far away from expectations that it must represent a fundamental, and probably permanent, change in the earth system. I sound like a broken record but this is almost certainly because of accelerated ocean stratification. It has no historical precedent because there has never been warming as fast as now, and the faster the warming the worst the stratification because the heat and mass transfer processes that take warmth from surface waters to greater depths work over decades or centuries.
After an average, but still impactful, El Nino in 2023/24 it was predicted that it would take some years to recharge the heat in the Pacific before it could be released again. That theory breaks down if the mass of water to be warmed is greatly reduced by keeping the heat only at the surface.
I don’t understand all the interactions but ENSO is basically a hysteresis between two states. Once conditions require the system to switch there is a reinforcing feedback that accelerates the move until the alternative state is reached. By significantly changing the ocean set up there is every chance of getting stuck in one of the hysteresis arms, which would almost certainly be the warm El Nino phase as more and more energy is being collected.
Things are almost certainly going to keep getting noticeably worse. Any acceleration that is now being identified will be the lower limit if the La Nina phase is disappearing. With the deep water Pacific removed as a sink, and greater heat overall coming in as the earth energy imbalance grows (which is the main mechanism for recent acceleration), then further rapid doubling or worse of the warming rate is explicable and actually to be expected.
George, I found a paper that corroborates your view:
“…we derive a linear model which predicts the evolution of ENSO variability from only East Pacific temperature and stratification. We further show that subsurface warming, and therefore stratification, is connected to surface warming with a lag, enabling us to create a lag-linear model that explains ∼90% of simulated changes in ENSO variability from only global mean SST and its history.
“This efficient predictor can forecast ENSO strength over time in any warming scenario, and reveals that faster emissions lead to stronger peak ENSO variability even with identical total emissions.”
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2603.03458
The paper talks about a “transient” rise in El Nino strength but this is not very comforting given that that period would last decades and the events within it would be historically unprecedented.
George, Pano 👍👍
If you think You sound like a broken record, you should read Sam Carana’s Arctic blog. It’s a side effect of the Cassandra syndrome, when you see the future too far ahead of any else, the more correct you are, the more you’re doomed to repeat your prognostications since nothing’s happened to change your predicted outcome.
Carana predicted that this year’s El Niño would/could do precisely the reset others are now predicting, but he did so years ago, leaving him in exactly the predicament you described.
He has, scarily, been positing for years that, given the methane monster humanity is letting loose, that, in combination with the accelerating melting this Hell Nino will produce, cause the heat to go from linear to exponential … this year. In other words, climate derangement gone wild.
Sam always ends his posts with the warning: The Situation is Dire, insisting we implement his Climate Emergency Plan … I think I’ve been reading that for > 15 years now, so you can see why I might be fed up with all the scientific warnings, as, although the science might be clear, so is the fact that that only INcreases the certainty that it will be ignored/suppressed:

The Return of an Older Earth
John Gray quotes a remarkable line from J.G. Ballard’s The Drowned World: the Earth is returning to a distant geological past.
It is an unsettling thought.
We spend most of our time talking about the future – 2050, 2100, the next heatwave, the next climate summit – as if the planet were moving toward something new.
Perhaps it is the other way around.
Perhaps the Earth is not entering an unfamiliar state at all. Perhaps it is we who are leaving an exceptionally brief episode in its history: ten thousand years of unusually stable seasons, obedient rivers and predictable coastlines. A fortunate interval that allowed cities, wheat fields, railways and airports to appear.
To a geologist, our world might look like a curious exception.
To us, it simply became normal.
Ballard quietly reverses that perspective. His flooded cities and tropical lagoons are not a punishment and not an apocalypse. They are merely a change of scenery. The planet resumes an older narrative that has played for millions of years. Mangroves, crocodiles and warm oceans feel no nostalgia for the Holocene.
Only humans do.
Perhaps that is the real misunderstanding of our age. We speak endlessly about saving the Earth, while the Earth requires no saving at all. It has survived asteroid impacts, ice ages and vanished continents.
It is civilisation that discovers, somewhat belatedly, that it was built inside an extraordinarily narrow climatic window.
Beneath the roads, the power grids, the financial markets and the data centres, the older Earth waits with geological patience.
It is in no hurry.
We are.
Zip, or as George Carlin pithily observed, “The planet is fine. The people are fucked!”
What you say is true – we have built our civilisation in a Goldilocks era of stability on a Goldilocks planet, yet remain largely oblivious to how incredibly improbable those conditions are. It’s sobering how much damage even fairly minor perturbations within our era of stability have caused in the past:
“The Great Frost and forgotten famine [Ireland].
“For a generation prior to 1740, the winters had been quite benign. But the so-called “Great Frost” in the first month of that year began a two-year period recalled as one of the bleakest in our country’s history.”

I over heard this report a few minutes ago that someone else was listening to. The report was about plans to build a 1 mile long 800 or 900 foot wide cruise ship that would sail around the world at 7 knots carrying 50,000 plus passangers, many who would be full time residents who would be served by 20,000 crew members. I think that the report said that the ship would have a displacement 20 million tons.
The report above certianly tops the report that both the USSR and the USA had a nuclear bomber crash on the same day, recently.
Seasteading. Could be a libertarian pipe dream.
A vast and soulless, floating disease vector, Curt. I can’t think of much worse.
Iran’s army says Israel has violated the ceasefire in southern Lebanon 84 times since the US-Iran deal was announced on Sunday, adding that the aggressor “should expect a harsh response” if the attacks continue.
Which it seems reasonable to speculate they will, Survivalist.
Kurt methinx… Cruise ships, are floating plague ships…
Bad enough that long haul international flights often end up giving me a nasty cold or flu bug, but cruise ships are much worse incubators.
My local southern hemisphere winter has been so mild so far, a few damp foggy mornings with overcast skies, occasional light drizzles,, but no frosts yet, but at least we have plenty of water going into next summer, but will it last 3+ years of severe El Nino drought conditions?
Meanwhile, social media are taking bets on how long the MoU will hold? Ha! Maybe its an Aussie cultural *thing* – when in crisis, put your money down & bet on coin flips.. Geopolitical “Two-Up”
Unfortunately, I’m surrounded by people in real life who think the US/West is doing the right thing.. & wiping Iran and other various Arab, muslim, ethnic populations off the face of the Earth (along with Russians) & erased from history, will fix everything from bad breath to climate change to energy depletion.
Not exactly “shared values” with me 🙂 But I’m obviously in an old-fashioned minority mindset and so best to keep my mouth shut around the locals – whatever happened to the anti-war and anti-nuke movements & public sentiments of my youth? Maybe naivety of youth, but was a time that I recognised some evidence of social “shared values” and “social cohesion”.
Speaking of which, I have been notified that I am now old enough to apply for Aged Pension/Social Security benefits …. so I guess that’s a possible personal plus – not so much any potential cash benefit or $$ “top up”, but the Commonwealth Seniors Card is worthwhile – discounts on all sorts of things, like ALL health care, utility bills, insurance, motor vehicle registration, local council taxes/rates etc..
Maybe I cab afford a few more “Bread & Circuses” before I pass on…
“…been notified that I am now old enough to apply for Aged Pension/Social Security benefits…”
I bet that snuck up on you, Rain. 😄
Time is so trippy. You look back and wonder what the hell happened to it all. It felt so real at the time but now in retrospect it starts to feel a bit like a dream… Well, that’s how it is for me, at least.
… gently down the stream.
