“How ‘Godzilla’ El Nino could plunge world into chaos…
“While droughts and storms are bad enough, experts say this could be the strongest El Niño on record, with even more severe potential outcomes. These include flooding, landslides, wildfires, famine, conflict and migration.”
“The looming El Niño could be bad – but much worse is to come.
“However strong this El Niño turns out to be, we can be sure that even more damaging El Niños will occur in the coming decades. Even if future events are no stronger, their effects will be greater in a warmer world.”

More than the speed and recent acceleration with which things are going into the toilet, it is notable how we are proving almost every theory of civilisation collapse, all at the same time: destruction of environment and climate change – tick; inept, sociopathic and blinkered leadership – tick; exhaustion of resources and energy availability- tick; overproduction of elites and negative demographic cycles – tick; misuse of technology – tick; water exhaustion, salinisation and desertification – tick; debt bubbles and currency debasement – tick; marginal complexity inefficiency and falling EROI – tick; Glubb’s penultimate age of decadence – tick(ish).
No invasion from Mongol hordes or high mortality pandemic (yet), and technology seems to be working, not by getting really clever, but by making us really dumb, but otherwise all the theories I’ve seen are covered. Maybe most of these happening concurrently is what it takes, and maybe it is almost inevitable that after a certain time, and relative degree of progress within exogenous boundaries, enough of them always will happen together. Maybe not so much a Jenga tower as a simultaneous detonation or several charges to bring a quarry rock face down.
Thanks George, you “ticked” all the boxes I think. Even the acceleration is accelerating it seems.
Another way to put that is “exponential.” 🥳🤯
George, thank you – that is a good rundown. I found an interesting quote from John Glubb that echoes Tainter:
“Perhaps the most dangerous by-product of the Age of Intellect [which precedes the Age of Decadence] is the unconscious growth of the idea that the human brain can solve the problems of the world.”
And a loss of social cohesion in many countries…isolationism, resentment, generational discord, sequestration of extreme wealth to a very few. Its a recipe for widespread instability, along with the rest of the factors you have listed George.
August, my apologies that your comments got caught in moderation overnight. I think it’s because you are a first time commenter, in which case welcome to the site.
When are we going to start referring to it as “El Hombre” instead of “El Niño”?
😂
John, El Monstruo is certainly closer to the mark for this one. For those who don’t know the origin of the term:
“The original phrase, El Niño de Navidad, arose centuries ago, when Peruvian fishermen named the weather phenomenon after the newborn Christ.”

The Gyroscope
The gyroscope is one of the most “mysterious” instruments humanity has ever devised. A spinning point of orientation, based on opposing forces and vectors.
What strikes me is that we seem to be looking at our own “gyroscopic systems” in a state of near panic, desperately searching for balance, while the underlying energy reality on a planetary scale turns much of this into a rather absurd conjuring trick.
Climate conferences speak of controlling global warming while the Earth’s energy balance has demonstrably shifted. Financial markets speak of growth, AI, supercycles and investments worth tens of trillions, while debt continues to rise, resources become scarcer and the energetic costs of maintaining the system keep increasing.
These are two vectors operating within paradigms of our own making. During the fossil-fuel era, we treated energy and money as vectors within a giant gyroscope, believing that the system could maintain equilibrium and perhaps even restore balance on a planetary scale.
For a while, it seemed to work reasonably well.
The impression emerged that the economy could stabilize itself through markets, while energy supplies would somehow accommodate the climate challenge with a bit less CO₂ emissions.
But we misjudged both the vectors and the scale.
The scale at which the discrepancy becomes visible is staggering, and so we prefer not to look at it.
Human civilization runs on roughly twenty terawatts of primary energy. That is the energetic foundation of our economy, our industry, our agriculture and our transport systems.
Yet the disturbance in the Earth’s energy balance has now reached a magnitude that exceeds this many times over.
The current planetary energy imbalance amounts to roughly four hundred to five hundred terawatts.
While we debate how to allocate our twenty terawatts, the climate system is responding to an additional energy flow approximately twenty-five times larger.
That places many of our economic and political debates in a remarkably lightweight perspective.
Meanwhile, the oceans, atmosphere and land masses continuously absorb extra energy on a scale that exceeds ordinary human imagination.
That is the real paradox of our time.
We continue to debate the distribution of energy within the gyroscope.
Meanwhile, the energy flow that drives the gyroscope itself is changing.
“While we debate how to allocate our twenty terawatts, the climate system is responding to an additional energy flow approximately twenty-five times larger.”
Zip, that is a sobering way of framing it. Our delusions of invincibility are in for a very humbling encounter with physics.
I recently wrote that individual and social time have merged. The goals of globalized society are now identical both in scope and substance with those of a global class of the wealthy and the suburban. This is also true in a more direct sense. The lifetime of this society is identical with that of at least a majority of individuals currently alive. In this, at least, there are no walls and checkpoints separating rich from poor. We were not born equal but we shall die equal.
Jupiviv, right. Economy, premium, business or first class… it won’t matter much when the plane hits the ground.

All in one day. This man is not well. Impeachment and removal NOW.
Truth Wizard, let’s not go too far down the political rabbit hole.
Politics is inevitably going to turn ever more dysfunctional. I’m not saying that people should meekly accept that, but this is primarily an LtG / climate change blog and I am not temperamentally suited to moderating an angry, political comments section.
What an insane nation. The dismantling of the ocean buoys is pure crime against ALL of humanity.
MAGA is a Crisis Cult.
Indeed the man is not well.
Neither is a country who would a man like that for a leader, or even to be a school crosswalk monitor.
Have some good … thoughts! (cannot call it good news – very unlikely to happen)
… the authors envisage three steps: more than halving average working time from 2,100 hours a year to 1,000 hours, roughly equivalent to a two-and-a-half-day working week; encouraging people to eat less red meat, which is the main driver of deforestation and ecological destruction; and refocusing the economy toward low-consumption activities by more than doubling education spending to €8,400 (£7,250) a person and healthcare spending to €14,400 …
Tackling inequality is a central goal … increase for almost everyone, with the greatest gains in the global south. The exception would be the mega-rich, who would be highly taxed because they are most responsible for the climate crisis.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jun/04/world-inequality-lab-equality-academics-planetary-survival
Nice report, but the academic authors don’t disclose how much pot they smoked or ayahuasca they inhaled to get such a massive effort of pie-in-the-sky completed.
Also, Piketty et al forgot to include the necessary mechanisms of enforcement against the uber-powerful transnational corporations currently stoking the engine of commerce toward the cliff of mammalian extinction, but on a day when Space-X is getting Elon to that coveted first trillionaire psychopath level, we’ve all got to admire such sweet, utter disregard of reality.
Mad Hatter, I’m sure there are some good ideas in there but our problem is primarily a biophysical one; not one of political will.
A fairer reallocation of resources would be nice but it is not going to happen in an energy/resource-constrained system that is breaking down under the stress of converging crises.
I sometimes imagine that after the crash – as in the many pockets of humanity crashing today – we’ll see people only able to find tenuous work, eating only what red meat they can kill or steal, and burning the castles of the rich, or dying trying. Equally desperate and impoverished and struggling with the storms and floods, those that remain have a good chance of living more equitably than we in the west have. I’ve often found the most generous people are those used to having little.
Docs and surgeons going to med school and then doing a few to several years of residency in order to work 1000 hours a year is not a great idea.
Does your town have 200 firefighters working 2000 hours a year? Now you need 400 firefighters.
If global warming doesn’t send us into extinction, it will thin out the herd. 😉
