The intricacies of tax law, especially international tax law, are enough to send most people to sleep but it is what keeps states afloat.
To that end the article ““US will be exempt from global tax deal targeting profits of large multinationals.” suggests the USA is intent on plundering the rest of the world.
The article ““Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a “significant increase” in tax collection and compliance this year as Russia’s wartime economy continues to lose momentum.” suggests the Russian war economy is in a bad way.
As an aside I dread to think what Putin’s idea of tax enforcement is. I guess a bit sterner that a stiff letter from the UK’s HMRC!!!

This link is dated September 13, 2025, so a lot has changed in the interim. But it seems Russia might be leading the charge to hoarding silver because the fiat ruble is losing value. ME: Yes, storing high purity silver takes up much more vault volume than storing gold, but the simple solution is to press coins, then let the citizens be the holders/guards of the silver.
Let say silver hits $100/oz or more. The cost of pressing the coins at scale will be minimal relative to the intrinsic value of the silver, and a coin can last for decades in circulation versus a fiat paper currency wearing out quickly.
What metals are in the US quarter? The current U.S. quarter is made of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. This composition has been standard since 1965, when the U.S. Mint transitioned from using silver to copper-nickel clad coins due to rising silver prices.
So, when the price of copper and nickel rise high enough–> that giant sucking sound will be all 1965 and later coinage being melted down for industrial use. When there is not enough affordable diesel to continue advanced depletion ore mining for PMs and industrial metals, then recycling will be the name of the game.
There are 80 US quarters in a pound. Face value of 80 quarters is $20 bucks. The current price of copper is $5.73/pound, and nickel is $17.83 per kilogram. How much more time is needed before that sucking sound begins to hoover up the 1965 & later coins?
From Pan’s link above: Four US quarters will get you 1.47 million of Iranian Rials. Is that now a wheelbarrow full of fiat currency? Or just a couple of slices of bread for your children?

Bob, I don’t think it just shoring up the Ruble in Russia’s case:
“In a stark departure from half a century of central bank practice, Russia made waves in 2024 by becoming the first nation to publicly announce the explicit inclusion of silver in its state reserves…
“This strategic move involves allocating $535 million over the 2025-2027 period for precious metals, including silver, platinum, and palladium. This groundbreaking decision by Russia is viewed as a strategic maneuver to further diversify its reserves beyond traditional assets and reduce dependency on Western financial systems, viewing precious metals as sanction-proof.”

“Yeah, it’s scary.” Hahaha. Then it’s back to BAU. Or as someone recently remarked to me, “I think good will prevail.” OK. Sure.
The thing I have to remind myself of is that all of this insanity IS TO BE EXPECTED. Leaders like Biden or Trump, scrambling for “natural resources,” war, the fall of the last remnants of the rule of law and things like free speech, etc., etc. are how it goes with collapse. The thing is that very few if any of us have been through a collapse like this (and certainly not globally) so even though we understand intellectually, emotionally we are gobsmacked.
Somehow you manage to inject some humor into your latest video. Hats off. It is a terrible time. We all know it’s going to get worse before we’re dead.

The international order in which I grew up in is now officially severed. Imperialism is the way of the future and the thought of that makes me sick.
Also, Sorry about replying to my own comment. But I just ran into this, felt obliged to share it.

Blue Ocean Event later this year? I’m done.
Yep, imperialism will result in two bull elephants {US & China?} fighting for control. Lots of ants {rest of the world?] will get trampled underfoot until global carrying capacity is reached [even the bull elephants go extinct].
At this late date, if the entire world instead peacefully held hands and sang Kumbaya: this would be similar to the fate of the reindeer of St. Matthew Island. They just watched each other simultaneously starve & freeze to death. No trampling underfoot, but dead just the same as they reduced to carrying capacity, then zero a few years later.
Mama Nature no like Overshoot [Thermo/Gene Collision]!
Kord, a lot of people are now saying what you just said. I do not understand why so many people do not understand that the international order died in March of 2003 when the United States and its allies attacked a country that had not attacked them, withjout UN approval, under false pretenses. The sory of the invansion of Iraq is not classified. It was all very obvious to the entire world.
Not only that based upon the testimony of Condolisa Rice in hearings about the Sept. 11th 2001 attacks it is not at all hard to imagine that high level officials of the US Government knew about those attacks in advance and deliberately failed to stop them.
It would make some sense for this early 21st century history not to resonate with young adults. But for those adults over 30 or 35 to think that international law ended in 2026 shows a pretty selective memory.
One could also say that international law did not exist even in the post world war 2 cold war era. But the narrative is that overthrowing leaders of 3rd world countries, like Allende in Chile, was OK becuase it was for what was commonly believed at the time the greater goal of opposing communism /socialism.
One could say that INternational law did not exist in WW 2 either. Of course that may not be neccessary as it is so obvious. But what is not obvious is that the western allies were not obeying international law either. But then the rational was that fighting the Nazis was more important than International law.
Then prior to World War 2 international law was pretty much just England and France and perhaps the Netherlands saying what international law was and everyone one else had to shut up.
What has changed is that there is not even a serious attempt to proclaim anymore.
“the international order died in March of 2003…”
Curt, even if the outgoing, rules-based order was rigged, hypocritical etc., the need to justify actions within it still imposed constraints. The era we’re moving into now is more “Wild West”…

Basically the self-aware resource parasitism (and alternately guilty and proud of it based on the necessities of social media profilicity) model could be successful in Venezuela… in theory. Practically, it is difficult and risky especially factoring in the progression of climate/net energy related issues. Also Iraq was a different time and place. China poured 100 bn into Venezuela and look what happened. Moreover, I wonder what that 100 bn was for? Just to maintain or did they actually develop anything?
Beyond America making a point about who owns the Americas, as well as the unstated/publicized goal of securing potentially exploitable resource deposits with minimal hassle in anticipation of the intensification of polycrisis, it’s all spectable by my reckoning.
Jupiviv, the Trump administration sounds more bullish than RazorOil:

‘Operation Absolute Resolve’. And suddenly Trump was standing there with an empty shopping cart
The plan was simple. Too simple.
Arrest Maduro. Call him a narcoterrorist. Put him on a plane to New York. And then walk through Venezuela with a shopping cart as if it were a Walmart. Whole shelves at once. Brand Orinoco. Heavy oil. Gas. Minerals. Ports. Done. As if power equals ownership.
As if geopolitics has a checkout counter.
For a moment it worked. The world was stunned. Maduro is now sitting opposite a 93-year-old judge, Alvin Hellerstein, who knows his files. In Washington, glasses are clinking. Operation Absolute Resolve. Old assets. Reopening. The return of “American oil”.
But while Trump and Rubio are congratulating themselves, power is shifting elsewhere. Delcy Rodríguez moves forward. The first hands she shakes are not American. They belong to China, India and Russia. BRICS. No press moment. No statements. Just business. At that point the game is over. The reserves still exist in reports, but they are now out of reach of the American Big Oils, which never really believed in them anyway.
The same thing is looming in Greenland. Call it ‘Operation Ice Station Zebra 2.0’. Driven by the resource fantasies of Musk and Silicon Valley. From warmth to icy cold, where very different physical laws apply. A military claim would not be strength, but self-damage. NATO fractures. Europe turns away. Washington has no icebreakers. What remains is emptiness, sanctions and reputational damage.
This is no longer an early-20th-century war where borders were redrawn with a ruler. That is the mistake. War now only increases chaos and shortens time. And time is exactly what difficult energy and resource extraction needs.
Arctic oil. Tar sands. Deep sea. Heavy offshore. They require calm, capital, insurance, technology, years. War drives all of that away. Chaos always wins. Russia shows it. Ukraine has not only cut pipelines, it has frozen Russia’s fossil future itself, literally. Arctic projects. LNG expansions. Barents Sea. Kara Sea. Too expensive. Too slow. Sanctioned. Uninsurable. They still exist in spreadsheets, but no longer in Rosneft decisions.
Libya shows the same thing without sanctions. Permanent fragmentation. Oil fields open, closed, open. Militias in between. Production can return. Investment cannot. Long projects die first.
This is the global pattern, spreading like an oil slick. What was technically possible becomes politically impossible. What is called recoverable becomes stranded. Not because of geology, but because of violence and time pressure.
The outcome is paradoxical. The chaos meant to seize energy and resources makes them disappear faster. The horizon of the fossil era is moving forward at speed. Faster than models. Faster than policy. Faster than optimism.
The last round has been called, but this is no friendly closing time. This is the moment when the bar empties without settling the bill. Bottles disappear under coats, the cash register stays open, the tap is torn loose. The mirrors behind the bar shatter. Bar stools turn into projectiles. Whatever was still standing is knocked over before someone else can use it. What remains is an empty space full of shards and debris that no one cleans up anymore. Let’s see what Hellerstein can still distill from that.
Operation Absolute Resolve.
Who comes up with names like that, anyway?

This article says gold mining is plateauing, then slowly declining due to ore depletion, but no mention of the coming diesel shortage. No diesel–>mining drops off the cliff. I am surprised these analysts didn’t include unaffordable energy in their forecast.
This gold mining decline would be good for the ecosystem, but eventually, gold total tonnage would be finally fixed at some amount. Then floating gold prices or a fixed exchange rate again? Probably don’t want Gresham’s Law to assert itself again.
