Mordecai Ogada is objectively the best youtuber.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMrkr-4dlhk
I just watched a video about tourist scammers in Paris, how temp/illegal migrants ask for charity donations or sell bracelets to unsuspecting members of the suburbanite class, tragically overflowing with compassion for “those people”; and how it sucks that “our” society allows this to happen.
And then I thought about what Mordecai exposes about conservation and related fields, how they are instruments to peacefully and efficiently eat “those people” out of house and home (literally), to the point where they are forced to go and sell bracelets to tourists in Europe for a few months to make what would be considered a good bit of money back home.
Take the whole drama around USAID, which unsurprisingly no one cares about anymore because it has served its purpose and we’ve moved on to the next thing, and the one after that. They officially provided foreign aid to third world nations and semi-officially acted as a platform for both native elites and white saviors to maintain and expand control over those nations. When this is spun as “feeding countries” within the context of the Trumpian austerity passion play, how is that not a scam. That statement is a malicious, barefaced lie and the only reason no one corrected it is because it became associated with the “culture war”.
How is that not a scam? In fact this exact scenario plays out in a lot of those scammer videos – there’s always that one scammer who pretends to be the honest upstanding businessman and drives off the bad guy scammers, warns the unsuspecting tourist about scammers, and then proceeds to scam them. And usually this is planned out ahead of time à la the “good cop, bad cop” routine.
I suppose that’s just how the world works. Everyone’s a good guy in their own head, but the goal is to be strong, clever, wealthy and fearsome enough to make everyone else agree with you. Like the fable about Alexander the Great where he asks a captured pirate what gives him the right to plunder so boldly the sea which, like the land, belongs to him alone, and the impudent cutthroat snidely retorts: the same that gives you the right to seize the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship I am called a robber, while you who does it with a great fleet are styled emperor.
Jupiviv, I think I recall you posting another of Mordecai’s videos calling BS on carbon credits. Very good it was.
USAID is still making the odd headline in its death throes: “Trump administration eyes USAID money to advance America First goals…

Two to go before the biosphere is toast, but i’m sure a few more EVs and another solar farm ot two will turn it around.
For this reason only, the curtailment of burning fossil fuels is enough reason to stop.
We do not realize how critical water chemistry is to aquatic life, not only the pH level, which is measured on a logarithmic scale, meaning each whole pH unit is ten times more acidic or basic than the next value, but its hardness or softness and mineral, metal content.
More likely, we won’t stop, as Norman over at OFW just posted
Norman Pagett says:

“in energy terms, it seems to be in the nature of humankind to burn through what is available as fast as possible.
We did it to turn the planet into cash as fast as possible, and created gods to reassure ourselves that it is all ‘gods holy purpose’
no other animal does this —we have screwed up their world as well our own
That sums it up 😁, psychology . As you aptly pointed out here in you comment, Leaf, we’ll pretend to fix the crisis …
China for First Time Promises to Reduce Its Greenhouse Gas Emissions
President Xi Jinping told a U.N. climate summit that China will reduce emissions across its economy, expand renewables sixfold and make electric cars “mainstream.” NYTIMES..🤣
They WILL
reduce it, just like every other country will. But not through “renewables” or EVs, but through collapse.
China understands only to well the geopolitical advantages of playing the “face” to America’s “heel”, to use wrestling terminology.

Though the Industrial Revolution was born in Shropshire, iron-working techniques had been known for millennia. However, it was an expensive undertaking in real terms, needing large amounts of wood to make the charcoal to produce the iron and objects that had to be beaten out in a blacksmith’s forge.
Then one man made the breakthrough that kickstarted the Industrial Revolution: making iron in vast quantities using coke instead of charcoal. In 1709 Abraham Darby built his pioneering coke-fired blast furnace to produce cast iron at Coalbrookdale.
Abundant iron and coal brought together men with a common purpose. Amongst them, Wilkinson and Watt developed the technology of the modern steam engine. Richard Trevithick built his viable locomotive here, whilst Abraham Darby II supplied the iron rails for it. Hazledine’s ironworks at Shrewsbury built the Ditherington Flax Mill, still standing today as the grandfather of all skyscrapers. Thomas Telford became surveyor of public works here, and built forty bridges in the county, churches, major canal infrastructure, and the London to Holyhead road.
It was the technology and vision of these men that set the groundwork for modern mass production, which built our cities and all the complexity that sustains them, and us.
Wow. As Kunstler said, each step “seemed like a good idea at the time.”

Best Nate Hagen’s podcast I’ve heard in a long time, I stopped listening regularly when I found it getting repetitive.
Societal collapses…
https://youtu.be/W7JsDrHrRsI?si=CFKTciNnn0vkySZx
Intellectual men and their flaunting, via short-cut tighty-whitey T-shirts, of steroidal biceps – the latest in male psychic devolution.
Luke Kemp is the guy who thinks his “Don’t be a dick,” maxim could be a catalyst for systemic change; we’ve discussed his book a little in the comments section…
Equates working for fossil fuel industry or big tech to being a guard in a concentration camp… Thinks we can move away from fossil fuels… Rather self-righteous on camera, but biceps to die for, Martin. 😍
Young professor Luke has been crushing those books at Oxbridge. I mean, crushing thrm together, right in the stacks. Make the collapse girls go crazy.
Funny you should say that, ‘cause, sans biceps 💪, he kinda looks like a girl. (Which I don’t mean to be derogatory… it seems to me that most of the best looking people have a dollop of the opposite sex mixed into their features, a la the yin/Yang symbol).
Yeah, besides that one point, which is to me still a valid point, but impossible for anyone to do much about…
the other dozen or so points he outlines, especially about historical patterns of social structures are well-argued, well-supported and thought provoking.
‘Understanding the problem, is half the solution’, but only half, like others his solutions are all unworkable, but his understanding of the problem, particularly with the role of violent social heirarchy is spot on.
Rain, I will never find the time to listen to the whole thing. Does he have anything to say about the unsustainable cost of complexity relative to energy and available resources? Tainter would argue this is the primary driver of collapses with inequality being more of a by-product.
Tbh, the “few bad apples” interpretation of human history, which he seems to be espousing, has never sat comfortably with me, human nature being so complex and situational.
Thnx, Rain. I’ll check it out. There’s 🌧️ in today’s podcast…
