Hello Pan
I am beginning to dislike these NGOs more and more with their manageability and “earning models”
Well another piece that cries out for “action” on water….
Development banks, NGOs, and multilateral institutions love to publish optimistic reports about water and climate adaptation in Asia. They talk about “resilience,” “governance,” smart sensors, and billions in new dams and irrigation schemes. But behind that glossy language lies a far more fundamental story that rarely gets told: the silent plundering of aquifers, the underground water reserves that sustain hundreds of millions of people.
NASA’s GRACE satellites show the hard truth.
In northern India, groundwater levels are dropping by an average of 17.7 cubic kilometers per year. In the North China Plain, losses exceed 8 cubic kilometers annually. In the Indus Basin, depletion has tripled since 2015. These are not future projections but measurable facts. And as the water vanishes, the ground itself sinks: in Ahmedabad, India, subsidence from over-pumping reaches three centimeters a year.
Yet international reports remain quiet. Why? Because you can’t build a business model around exhaustion.
A dam or irrigation canal can be financed, an aquifer that’s drying out cannot. So the attention shifts to “innovation” and “investment,” while the physical base is ignored.
The consequences are dire. In India and Pakistan, the food supply for hundreds of millions depends on crops irrigated with water that will soon be gone. When the pumps run dry, no technology or financing instrument can make up the shortfall. The result will be food crises, migration, and social instability.
The irony is that the very institutions now calling for more investment have, for decades, financed the expansion of irrigation and intensive agriculture that drove this depletion in the first place.
The debts remain. The water does not.
Who pays the price? Not the banks, nor the conference delegates in Dubai and Singapore, but the small farmers watching their wells collapse. They are forced to migrate while policy reports continue to speak of “resilience” and “growth opportunities.”
Asia’s real water crisis is not unfolding in the boardrooms of development banks but deep underground. There, silently and invisibly, the reserves that entire societies rely on are disappearing. And once they are gone, they will not come back.
Zip, thank you for your thoughts on this. I agree the framing of the article is tiresome. It’s like the Editor challenged the author to see how many times she could cram the world “sustainable” into her piece (eleven, if you’re counting).
I wondered what sort of interest rates the The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank charges, but they don’t publish them. Nor does similar entity European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Their financial packages are apparently “bespoke”.
Fck Mann & Hotez!! Both get WELL PAID to promote calm and SOFT DENIAL. (Not to mention this will help sell their new book which came out last week.) Maybe “doomism” is growing exponentially for GOOD REASON!?!
You left out the u!
I have some news for Mann & Hotez; it’s not the doomers that are impeding actions on climate change. It is the inaction on climate change for the last 2 or 3 decades that increased the number of doomers. Doomers are on the increase because reality is settling in for more and more people.
It’s also hypocritical because the most effective forms of green politics/climate action tap directly into doomerism to lend themselves gravity while also promising the usual lineup of solutions. Greta Thunberg being a case in point, as well as the “blow up the pipelines” guy.
But we are in runaway warming..
Look at the data of that ocean heat MANN!
Dear Dr.Mann.. What the F has your volumes of hopium accomplished. You seem incapable of understanding how a human brain actually functions. There is no amount of pleading that will break through the wall of highly infectious mass psychosis infecting the planet
Thank you all for your comments on Michael Mann. I was stirring the pot a bit by including that article.
What a runaway freight train of an ego a person must have to appoint themselves Ultimate Gatekeeper of the Climate Change Narrative.
Obviously, I agree that his scapegoating of the tiny subset of people who one might call doomers is risible, especially when it is he who is in factual error; not them. This ship cannot be turned around for a whole host of reasons that are apparently a mystery to him, for all his academic laurels.
He talks about “polluters” as if he isn’t one and, ever classy, he can’t resist having a pop at Jim Hansen in that article. 🙄
There’s a million stupidities in that Mann/Hotez self-advertorial, but I would like to lead with this one:
“ the implication being that we are selling “hope” in the way, say, junkies on the street might sell drugs.”
Say what?
I thought that junkies typically buy and use the drugs, and that it is the good capitalist folks called “dealers” who sell the drugs. The confusion wrought by the flubbed simile by professors Mann/Hotez gets too convoluted to disentangle – junkies sometimes do some dealing, and dealers do become junkies, too, and, well, – forget it, it’s just all nonsense.
If the world wants me to enumerate the nonsense, well the pay up beforehand – how else do you think a doomer critic like me can ever have risen to the heights of “eminence in the political economy”?
Not seeing anyone forking over the cash, I’ll simply note that this indictment was brought to you on “livescience,” a website owned by something called “Purch,” which features blinking, blinding product advertisements in accordance with Purch’s product placement propaganda.
There you go – I hit my troll-farm alliteration goal of four P’s, and now can go comfortably viral to find my sweet lavish lifestyle.
Pan-O, how long can you hold out before livescience “Purch” gives you a takeover bid you can’t refuse?
Not long, Martin. I need me some of that sweet “Purch” revenue. 😎

Watch This Fish “Drive” To His Mom To Get Treats | The Dodo
When I was 10 I got a penny fish that ended up living 10 years. He slept in his tank right next to my bed. He’d wake me up in the mornings by swimming up and down the corner and splashing me. he had a little ball that we’d play with, id toss it in and he’d knock it up and out. He loved to be petted, he’d swim through your hand if you made a tunnel. It’s small thing, but he was the first pet I had that taught me ALL living things have a mind of their own, and can communicate if we just figure
I think one of the major advancements of human sociology and science is that we’ve begun to recognize animals are far more emotionally and practically intelligent, with personalities and feelings, than we ever thought possible
Invasive insect species is so prevalent in US it’s showing up on flight radar
Joe Sommerlad
A massive swarm of spotted lanternflies was detected on weather radar across the East Coast, including D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, on Thursday.
These insects, originating from South East Asia, are highly invasive and pose a significant threat to agricultural crops.
Meteorologists confirmed the radar readings were due to insects, not weather, by analysing reflectivity, correlation coefficient, and velocity data, which showed characteristics inconsistent with rain.
The species spreads rapidly due to its ability to lay eggs in diverse environments and its capacity to travel long distances by riding air currents up to 3,000 feet.
Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources issued guidance advising against harmful pesticides, instead recommending the use of circle traps and urging caution to avoid harming similar-looking, harmless insects.
Seems another invasive species is causing trouble here
Vince, thank you for those tidbits of info. The more we learn about the intelligence of these apparently simple creatures the worse I feel about the suffering we are inflicting on them. 😢
As a first-time keeper of chickens, I was amazed by how smart and emotional they are, given that their brains are the size of lima beans. When one of the initial pair we bought died prematurely, the survivor was bereft. She mourned for days… It just hadn’t occurred to me that their inner lives are as rich as they are.
Mr Mann is a toady pulling the company line and many us are not stupid after the 2008 crash. I am suck of these pr on the right and left on a variety of issues. Its summer and other bs. Many of live in reality and understand and see everyday what is happening. I think just as the anger grows against me elon musk and droge consequences as on a variety of issues its becoming harder for the pr to work anymore. Even on Palestine the Americans are turning against israel for good reason. As the empire falls apart and the pr campaign name one anyone from the last 10 years or even months where public opinion is turning on it. Scam Nation will come to an end and it will not be pretty as it goes down. Even Florida housing crash isn’t getting much news and Arizona water issues with the collapse of the Colorado water basin. The titanic is starting to go down and how much longer they can keep up the magic show with a non existent unicorn we will see.

Mt fuji eruption plans if it blows it top!
Heather, I guess it would be pretty ironic for us doomers if it was actually some tectonic black swan like Mount Fuji erupting or a colossal Californian earthquake that nudged us off the edge.
Wait a second. If I read this blog daily, does that mean I have a “Doom Porn” problem?! 😳
Oh dear! Time for therapy or intervention I guess 😉
“…does that mean I have a “Doom Porn” problem?!”
You may well, Jpf, but don’t worry – you won’t go blind. You may get mild eye-strain from all the scrolling, though. 😂
What they call “doom porn” is usually just looking at the facts, without bias.
The loss of the Panama upwelling seems to be another in a line of studies that show long term trends rather than just annual extreme events are now being driven by localised phenomena that cannot be captured in the large scale climate models (e’g. the stratification of Atlantic from low winds, cloud nucleation, polar vortices and jet stream meanders etc.).
The story “Climate change is making resources scarce and tensions rise, increasing the risk of future wars.” probably is the best exemplar of what this site is all about – the confluence of climate change, resource decline and social stresses (really just inevitable evolutionary responses to adversity), which makes collapse inevitable and likely to be rapid.
I’m guilty of doing something I often criticise others for, it’s not just climate change, it’s environmental destruction.
Spot on. And no worries, George. We know you understand and we love you.
