You can read the previous “Climate” thread here. I’ll be back on Monday with an “Economic” thread.

I don’t know if this is a new feature on my weather app but I noticed a section with data on temperature averages. It says today will be 8° above average for my location. 83 F. Totally survivable. Nothing to see here, move along.
Cassandra, over here we have rather a good site that shows you what the current temperature is relative to the historical norm at various weather stations around the UK, including Port Ellen on Islay:

Here’s a (hopeful?) musing… what if the climate chaos becomes so overwhelming that nations are forced to stop manufacturing war? A world where war is unaffordable… “what world, what world “ ( says the wicked witch of the west as she melts)
*what A world, what A world
Texas Guy, unfortunately economic crises tend to make nations more belligerent rather than less, and you get the feeling that, even if industry collapses, we’ll still be finding creative ways to attack the hell out of each other, probably on a more primitive, localised basis.
Silver lining! 😂 🤔
Pakistan and India? And probably any countries dependent on glacial melt.
Wishful thinking, I’d suggest it will be the economic miracle to balance out the damage to the economy from pollution and environmental destruction.
Hank Green and his 8 year old son’s aversion to “evil.” Arnold and his “stop whining” tagline.
C&E’s last choices are always such hilarity.
Note to Hank: humans and evil have always co-evolved. Stop lying to your kid. Arnold: stop the HGH.
430 and Rising.
Martin, nice to see you back and sardonic as ever. 😂
I actually love Arnold Schwarzenegger and his relentless positivity. I’ve no idea why, as it is a trait that generally rubs me up the wrong way. Perhaps it is residual affection from his T2, Predator days. Here’s one of his motivational quotes to inspire C&E readers on to dizzying heights:
“Just remember, you can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets.”
Come on. Too many negative waves. It’s easy, like he says, just follow the UK’s shining example: offshore all manufacturing; live somewhere with a long, windy coastline; import a lot of LNG but ignore the 10% burnt to produce the remainder; get electricity from an inter-connector that you can pretend is connected only to nuclear plants and not all the coal fired ones; redefine the most environmentally destructive and carbon intense generation method, wood pellets, as green provided the wood is grown abroad; numb your brain watching adverts with inanely grinning and infeasibly healthy looking bimbos of all ages and sexes enjoying carefree foreign travels and. cruise line vacations, content in the knowledge that aviation and shipping emissions are not counted against your country; feel smugly superior at achieving a nominal reduction in emissions even though it has been mostly forced on you and is only about 3% of what’s required; ignore the fact that so many sinks have become sources that emissions aren’t the real priority now; ignore the fact that concentrations of GHGs are already high enough to give at least four degrees of warming, and more likely a runaway to hothouse conditions; ignore water depletion, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and other pollution as equally dangerous threats, all of which are exacerbated by efforts to counter climate change; never, under any circumstances, mention de-growth, overshoot, overconsumption or overpopulation.
George, nice. You’re giving Martin a run for his money there with the caustic wit. 😂
Unfortunately, the hypocrisy and delusion is as as bad as you suggest.
Run for the money? Nah. George issues the mother of all comments, what used to be called “the mother” back in the 60s.
My only semi-sardonic quibble is that, never fear, the opposition will creepily repurpose and redesign your own words after they get tired of ignoring them a la the elephant in the room,
And, even worse, your own side will do the opposition’s own work for them – witness “overshoot,” which is now used by Andreas Malm and confreres to denote the opposite of what it is. Not a compulsion leading to extinction, but as a strategy to persist by the corporate powers that be. Or something – you’d have to ask Mr. SUV-keyer himself what his redefinition is supposed to mean.
Two last things, as long as I’ve got the open mic for a second:
1. George’s “so many sinks have become sources that emissions aren’t the real priority now” is damn close to a defining epitaph.
2. “Evil” – a “progressive” law professor was challenged last week by one of the Republican geeks in the best geekfests of our times , that of Congressional hearings, to name which US Supreme Court justices were “evil” according to a podcast comment she made. Nope, she said she most likely didn’t call them “evil,” must have been a misquote, couldn’t call any of them that, not Alito, not Thomas, not Roberts, not Gorsuch.
Bonus:
Lewd I did live. Evil did I dwel.
Evangelist = evil’s agent
Martin, I hadn’t heard of Andreas Malm or his “Overshoot” book:
“Overshoot is a brilliant book in many ways. Andreas Malm and Wim Carton aim to show that the transition from a fossil-fuel-based energy system to one based on renewables – specifically, wind and solar – cannot be achieved within a capitalist system based on the production and realisation of capital value.”
https://theecologist.org/2025/jan/20/capitalism-and-climate-overshoot
Sounds like he thinks Marxism is the panacea.
A few Clever Apes dying from weather weirding will not get the attention of the monkey minds. Maybe tens of thousands of deaths in one AGW event might turn on the light bulb in a few baboon brains.
We’ve got a prime directive which we have ignored. What about the prime question; What does one do when it’s too late? Dying dumb might be the only solution.
Not to worry, political, economic & religious delusions are working out great, so far?
TR, the 2011 drought in Somalia was exacerbated by climate change and killed approximately 250,000 people… but climate change attribution is a sufficiently inexact science for cynics to airbrush it out.
Plus, as depressing as it is, people are inured to mass mortality events in Africa.
Have our devices silenced the revolution or is it pending?

Sean, Tracy Chapman’s wonderful rabble-rousing notwithstanding, I think more authoritarian creep is probably baked into the cake; punctuated with worsening flashes of civil “disobedience” and social unrest in turn inviting further repression.
Meanwhile, constricting government budgets are going to see more and more people fall through the cracks, Subcity style. Desperate times…

Rain, I cheated and read the short version, which is still packed with interesting insights. I loved this summary:
“The economy is not a machine. It is not a market. It is not even a set of preferences. It is a circulating system of energy and information, embedded in a physical world governed by thermodynamic laws. If we continue to ignore these foundations, we will continue to build policies, institutions and systems that collapse under their own entropic weight.”
I only part company with him in his view that a switch to an entropy-reducing monetary and financial system can be orchestrated. Also, the global economy as a totality already self-organises to maximise its throughput of energy, so I am not convinced that ascribing EROEI values to sectors within it as if they are discrete has much utility, although I imagine it might be a helpful insight for investors.
I’ll try to find time to read the long version, though, as he may address that.
It is and will continue raining in Victoria over the next 3 days. Farmers are rejoicing 🙂
Thank you for that local intel, Wet Victorian, and welcome to the site.
When our warmest, sunniest and almost driest spring on record ended up here on Islay and we finally got some rain, the relief was enormous and felt atavistic. I imagine that is amplified tenfold for those poor Victorian farmers.
Howdy neighbour, we too, in the nation’s capital, but the rain never stopped here…our farmers are still struggling with heavy waterlogging…
But I’ll raise you, your rain, for one rare snowfall this morning…
I don’t like to comment on Sunday because I’m not sure many people check on an “off” posting day. But Robert Hunziker posted yesterday and I didn’t see it until later in the day. If I post it Tuesday it feels like it might be stale. On the other hand, many readers here are probably aware of some of the articles I post.
Nightmare of Nightmares: New (Big) CO2 Emissions by Robert Hunziker
Both the Arctic and the Amazon Rain Forest are now net sources of CO2.
Every time I hear (or read) Amazon Rain Forest I still think about the 4 lane highway being built through a protected area of the rain forest for COP30. It’s like the old saying, “Throwing the baby out with the bath water.”
Edward, it’s worth noting that the secretariat for COP30 has denied that the construction of Avenida Liberdade highway is specifically for COP30, arguing that it was approved in 2020 before Belem had been chosen to host.
The optics are terrible, though, particularly in conjunction with Brazil pushing ahead with oil-drilling at the mouth of the Amazon and rolling back environmental laws:
“The upper house passed the so-called “devastation bill” with 54 votes to 13 late on Wednesday, paving the way for projects ranging from mining and infrastructure to energy and farming to receive regulatory approval with little to no environmental oversight.”
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/22/brazil-environment-devastation-bill
“Might be stale” —? Strange world we live in where a three day old article might be considered stale. Thanks for posting it, Edward. I don’t want to read everything Dissident Voice published but I am always interested in Hunziker’s work.
“Solution: It’s all about burning fossil fuels. Figure it out!” I have figured it out: we’re all dead “men” walking!
PS I try to go back to the previous day’s C & E post to see if there are any new excellent comments, and there usually are.
