“‘We’re not preparing’: As Trump officials vow to eliminate FEMA, the agency is already in turmoil…March is typically when we’re finalizing hurricane plans. A lot of that got paused,”
I suspect the plan is to create such chaos, that when the breakdowns become daily occurrences (oh wait, that’s happening now!) the minions will clamor for something to be done. And something will be done… only it’ll be done to them, not for them. It will be a bumpy AND deadly ride… weather (pun intended) or not one fastens said seat belt. Good luck everyone.
I fully expect Louisiana to bankrupt itself due to hurricane damage. Without FEMA that state is screwed.
Well, every state is screwed. Some are just more vulnerable than others.
“…only it’ll be done to them, not for them.”
I suppose worsening authoritarianism is baked into the limits to growth cake. As populaces grow increasingly angry, fearful and generally discombobulated, cash-strapped governments are just going to opt for the blunt instrument of repression.
“Authoritarian creep” is already well underway over here:
“Civicus Monitor, a global research collaboration that measures basic freedoms, last year reclassified the UK was from a country where civic space had ‘narrowed’ to one where civic space is now ‘obstructed.’”

Helene was such a shocker – one of those hurricanes like Sandy, Harvey or Dorian that stands out in the memory. I wonder what surprises this season has in store…
“If we continue with this trend of deoxygenation, anchovies will not be OK with that”
I have a feeling most aquatic species won’t be OK with deoxygenated water but what do I know
John, your assumption is a sound one. The jellyfish don’t mind so much and there are a few species of eels and sharks plus sponges and bacteria that can cope with low oxygen seas but that’s about it.
Also, go Steelers!
So basic physics states that hot air travels to the coldest air first. Probably some kind of law of thermodynamics.
So look not to record breaking peak summer temperatures in places like Kuwait. But instead to coldest temperatures of peak winter in the arctic to get the truly shocking numbers.
Yes winter and night time temperatures are the first to break records and sky rocket. Head to the poles while you can. Because after that comes the 60 or 70 c days.
Fish, welcome to the site. I don’t believe you have commented before. You make an interesting point.

Earth Could Have Billions More People Than We Ever Realized
Humans 22 March 2025 ByDavid Nield
For the first time, our study provides evidence that a significant proportion of the rural population may be missing from global population datasets,” says environmental engineer Josias Láng-Ritter from Aalto University.
“We were surprised to find that the actual population living in rural areas is much higher than the global population data indicates – depending on the dataset, rural populations have been underestimated by between 53 percent to 84 percent over the period studied.”s
Drumroll please…
However, there’s definitely a conversation to be had. Even if the miscount is more moderate, we could still be looking at a correction encompassing hundreds of millions of people.
Population estimates are crucial in everything from providing public services to estimating the impacts of climate change, and the team behind the new research wants to see more investment in population tracking in rural areas – to make sure these people don’t miss out.
The research has been published in Nature Communications. from Science Alerts..
Yeah, right… investments, sure they will … Suppose it will all be looked over and addressed at the upcoming COPOUT I lost count conference.
“Earth Could Have Billions More People Than We Ever Realized.”
Vince, thank you for this – most interesting. I am not a misanthrope but this possibility did give me a bit of a sinking feeling. We are already taking such a toll on the planet.
That’s OK 🙂, in the vein of the view as author Ed Abbey
While Edward Abbey’s writing often criticized aspects of human society and culture, it’s more accurate to say he was not a misanthrope in the traditional sense, but rather a fierce critic of modern civilization and its impact on the natural world, often expressing a deep love for the wilderness and a disdain for its degradation.
Man’s deliberate destruction of his own habitat — planet Earth — could serve as a mighty theme for a mighty book worthy of a modern Melville or Tolstoy. But our best fictioneers confine themselves to domestic drama — soap opera with literary trimmings.
— In social affairs, I’m an optimist. I really do believe that our military-industrial civilization will soon collapse.
— Science is the whore of industry and the handmaiden of war.
Thanks, Justin, that cheered up my day..
If anyone is interested, Richard Crim published another of his crisis reports at substack. I think I learned about his substack from another commenter here. I found the report interesting.
The Crisis Report – 105
Edward, thank you for that – I’ve only skim-read it but it looks very good and very granular.
“Mainstream Climate Science has “sorta” started admitting that Hansen might be right.”
Meanwhile, Michael Mann is in the dog house, and unfortunately providing ammunition to climate deniers:

My climate bingo card keeps getting worse by the day. It will be interesting to see what states economics will go bankrupt first over this along with a million other problems on top it. Survival is getting more challenging by the day for humans soon our time will come like all of the other species we have killed due to our industrial civilization. I don’t think ai or elon will be saved by anything or anyone.
“My climate bingo card…”
Selfishly, my thoughts turn to home when I wonder what next. I can still see structural damage left by record-breaking Storm Eowyn from my window, and I can feel the effects of the terrible farming weather over the past two years every time I go to the supermarket.

Thanks for your comments 2 days ago. Mostly, I’m a man of few words and seldom write long comments and rarely (if ever) engage in online “debates” or extended back and forths.
Online Debates? Like that is so last century, Edward….Just for fun I had an online exchange debate with a Anthony “Willard” Watt (Watts up with that)disciple when Rolling Stone Magazine published “Global Warming Terrifying New Math” by Billion McKibben.
Think we rallied up to 13,000 entries on that one….
“Online Debates? Like that is so last century, Edward”
Well, I am up there in years. I didn’t specifically / literally mean online debates – but meant more like replying back and forth in a comment section.
That’s exactly what we did, Ed, back and forth, me and an autistic complusive creature named Evan Jones.
I’m not to blame for it, had a cheerleader as an audience and was hoping to be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records..
Alas, RS deleted them …
You’re welcome, Edward. I value your thoughts. I dislike those debates too and I gave up on that previous one and did not return. Online they don’t usually go anywhere. In person is another matter.
The rise of shocking censorship under the Biden admin and continued in various ways by Trump admin, was a huge eye-opener to me when people with what I thought were valid points of view were kicked off search results, social media and all kinds of places, de-banked, etc. The “truth” as we see it should be able to stand the light of day. I don’t expect to find much of it in the MSM though. Which is why Panopticon’s links often need to be seen through a wider lens (as he well knows).
Cassandra, they are indeed.
The threads (especially the economic; now somewhat geopolitical threads) are meant, in their totality, to offer a snapshot of a world descending into pre-collapse dysfunction under the duress of various limits to growth.
If any reminder is needed, I am not endorsing the worldview or biases of individual articles.
I hope you don’t need that prepping bag. Thank goodness you were smart enough to anticipate these more extreme events coming down the pipe.
“Every species has a limit.”
OMG! WTF! This can’t be true for the 8 billion Retards. It certainly couldn’t be true for white men, because we are superior. The Right wing men are even more superior, Ten feet tall & NTHE proof. Doesn’t look like the Left wing men are doing anything to stop the destruction of the habitat, being politically correct takes up too much time.
The only thing good about politics is that stupidity rises to the top. I really appreciate the transparency of voters. Get to your bookie! What are the odds we can destroy the global economy before AGW destroys us?
If the world isn’t laughing at The United States of FUBAR then they don’t have a scents of humor because they can’t smell what the U.S. is cooking.
TR.. I’ve missed your Negative Nellie posts in recent times 😂
I’ve been crawling through economic rabbit holes for weeks now, and given my geography & national cultural relationships with China, I tend to read a lot of Chinese sites, including their social media.
From micro economics, of my local inflation & food prices, and yes eggs are shocking & in shorter supply here too, I have to order home delivery from the wholesale warehouses about 2-3 days ahead to ensure access to some products like eggs, as just “popping down to the shops” is increasingly becoming a non-option. Delivery fee still only $2, but no longer get a “from truck to bench” service.. to be fair, that stopped during COVID.. and The dogs no longer get the occasional spare egg as treats in.their food bowls..
To Macro economics, national Budget came down as we head into next election cycle to be called any day now. Surprising thing, was a massive increase in pharmaceutical subsidies through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)…
Ahh the Trump tariffs .. not just steel, but also pharmaceuticals, the US has wanted to smash our PBS since the Year Dot.
For those who don’t know, the Australian PBS was established soon after WW2 (and even written into the Constitution. At that time, vaccines and antibiotics were revolutionising healthcare, and Oz being so small, and isolated geographically, without a single factory to make such things, almost all had to be imported at exorbitant cost of international shipping.
So the PBS fund guaranteed that Oz consumers would only pay an affordable cap per 1 month prescription supply. The govts Therapeutic Goods Admin agency (like the FDA in the US) negotiates a govt price with the multinationals seeking to rip us off. Over the years, that co-pay cap gets increased. Now, the latest Budget is planning to drop the consumer PBS co-pays from $50 to $28 ish.. if they get elected again. The conservative Opposition has other ideas, promising a temporary cut in fuel/petrol excise (tax).
To Meta Economics of global “capital flows” & international stocks & bonds, and various essential industry trade flows and the all-important supply chains. BRICS developing their own internal Grain exchange.
I keep taking away how much humour the Chinese have towards Trump, they think he’s hilarious as the bumbling superhero meme complete with his magical ‘Cape of Tariffs’.
The economic battlefield is warming faster than the planet, especially in the AI ‘space-race’ with the launch of open source Deep Seek 3
As it happens, I’ve had a small unexpected windfall inheritance, and planning a tourist holiday visit to China in October. I’m getting old, on my bucket list is a ride on a high speed rail 🥰

Everyone needs to partake in laughter & joy whenever possible.
Have a blast, Rain.
I was in Qingdao and Beijing back in the mid-90’s, as my wife, then an actress, was playing the love interest in an Anglo-Chinese TV series based on the book “Mr Ma & Son”, and I was fortunate enough to accompany her. I cant even begin to imagine how much it has changed.
A ride on high speed rail does sound fun!
Thanks for your update. I stock up on eggs, too, when I can. And also pray that the wildfires don’t come too close to me. 🤪 😱
Matt Simon’s book on microplastics and nanoplastics ‘A poison Like No Other’ is very instructive. A dense and very well researched book where he points the finger at tires as contributing up to 70% of the microplastics in the atmosphere.
