Two days ago I posted the BBC article, “Amazon forest felled to build road for climate summit”
Robert Hunziker authored a new piece about this abomination in his latest article.
Amazon Rainforest Cleared for Climate Conference
First paragraph:
“This year’s annual UN climate conference COP30 with 50,000 expected attendees held in Belém, Brazil is one-upping the past two COPs (UN Conference of the Parties) that were held by, and dictated by, Middle Eastern fossil fuel countries, eye-openers that many eco-minded people, still to this day, cannot stomach. Now, Brazil is set to upstage the oil sheiks by bulldozing tens of thousands of acres of “protected rainforest” to build a 4-lane highway to “help reduce traffic” during the two-week conference. This is not made-up. It is true.“
Edward, thank you. I’m afraid we are a very confused species at this point. Brazil is itself a major oil-producer, of course:
“Despite his climate leadership stance ahead of COP30, Brazilian President Lula da Silva is pushing to approve oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon.
“Lula argues that oil revenues will fund Brazil’s energy transition. Critics say this is a flawed justification for expanding oil extraction under the guise of financing climate solutions.”

Hello Pan
I recently took a quick dive into the Belem world of the COP greenwashers. This may interest you. The world is truly and utterly rotten. The links are endless, truly a criminal gang.
….The ‘Gold Laundry’ has moved to Belém and the boss of the laundry is an old acquaintance: Sylvain Goetz
The global gold trade has been a playground for shadowy networks, shady traders and legal proceedings that end in convictions as often as in strategically placed cover-ups. A new chapter has begun with the arrival of Brazil’s largest gold refinery, located in Belém. And the protagonist? An old acquaintance from the Belgian gold trade: Sylvain Goetz.
From Antwerp to Uganda, and now to the Amazon
The name Goetz has been causing a stir in the world of gold trading and refining for years. Sylvain Goetz, a ‘retired businessman’, as he likes to call himself, was previously involved in the infamous Tony Goetz NV and the African Gold Refinery (AGR) in Uganda. The latter was discredited for processing gold from conflict areas, including the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the US Treasury Department, AGR played a key role in laundering illegally mined gold, which led to sanctions against Goetz and his network.
2. But the gold trade is just as resilient as the precious metal itself. With the construction of North Star Refino SA in Belém, Goetz is continuing his activities, this time with the support of the Brazilian government. The goal? A refinery that can process up to 48 tonnes of gold ore annually, in a region where almost 60% of the gold has dubious origins.
The perfect backdrop for a dark scenario
The state of Pará has been the epicentre of illegal mining for years. The ‘garimpos’, the illegal gold miners who dig deep into the Amazon rainforest, are not only responsible for massive deforestation, but also for serious mercury pollution and violence against indigenous communities. The gold that is mined here often finds its way to the regular markets via forged documents and a series of middlemen. It is precisely this type of gold that, once refined, becomes unrecognisable and ends up in global circulation.
3. The arrival of a huge refinery in this region is a blessing for the gold trade, but a curse for transparency. Goetz and his partners promise strict compliance protocols and controls, but the question is how effective these will be in a market that has been ignored for decades.
Count your profits
T
he timing of this refinery is no coincidence. Gold prices have risen sharply in recent years due to economic uncertainties, inflation and geopolitical tensions. The demand for ‘legal’ gold remains high, and refineries that are able to rid the dirty gold of its past are a guarantee for profitable business.
For Sylvain Goetz, the case seems simple: a strategic move, a new market and a multi-billion dollar industry that is still hungry for gold, regardless of its origin. Whether the Brazilian authorities will be able to ignore Goetz’s past and the dangers of the Amazon gold trade is another question.
One thing is certain: the washing machines of the ‘gold laundrette’ are once again running at full speed and Belém has become the new washing centre.
4, A green wash at COP30
And as if it were not all ironic enough, Belém will be the host city for COP30 in 2025, the major UN climate summit where world leaders will promise to save the planet with serious expressions on their faces. While diplomats debate deforestation and CO2 reduction, Brazil’s largest gold refinery will be flourishing a stone’s throw away, fuelled by an industry that is razing the Amazon rainforest to the ground.
The setting for this global climate summit seems to have been chosen carefully: the world press is given a perfect stage to pretend that serious climate action is taking place, while the local elite – with Goetz and his cronies in the front row – quietly continue to plunder the Amazon. A classic win-win situation: the world gets a green PR moment, and the gold trade continues exactly as it always has.
And so gold washing and green washing are in full swing.
https://theintercept.com/2022/02/17/brazil-amazon-gold-refinery-investor-sylvain-goetz/
That is an ugly web of intrigue, Zip. Safe haven demand seems likely to keep gold prices buoyant for the foreseeable, encouraging more of this sort of human misery and ecological destruction.
I posted an article just the other day about how illegal gold-mining, encouraged by high prices, is now supplanting cocoa-growing in Ghana, which is in turn pushing up chocolate prices. I’m sure Venezuela isn’t the only place where children are engaged in the grunt work:
“Gold and mercury, not books, for Venezuela’s child miners… “It’s a matter of survival,” said Eumelis Moya, coordinator of the university’s office of human rights. “People have postponed their aspirations to eat, to meet their needs.””
https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2023/9/20/gold-and-mercury-not-books-for-venezuelas-child-miners
It was 95F yesterday (35C). And it was oppressive. Today cooler with dry winds from the west and more red flag/fire warnings. And the beat goes on.
You leave me with little choice but to link to this soul classic by The Whispers, Texas Guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOaxEa5ONJw
Soggy Islay is relentlessly dry and the forecast for next week is yet more sun; zero rain. I’m not complaining really.
Even now things look really bad but then I have to remind myself that this could be only about a fiftieth of what we’ll see at 3 degrees and maybe one five hundredth (i.e. we are less then 0.2% of what’s coming) at 4 degrees – both numbers are increasingly obviously unsurvivable by almost of the human race and most mammals bigger than a house cat, even without including the resource shortages and other environmental affronts that will coincide with them.
George, I don’t think it is a stretch to suggest that we will probably have de facto blown past 2C warming within ten years, even if the IPCC will still claim otherwise on a technical basis. I highly doubt our already overstretched financial system can cope with the level of stress implied by this report:
“[At 2C] Regions already prone to high temperatures, such as the Middle East and North Africa, will experience “super heatwaves” with temperatures exceeding 50C (122F). This will make some areas potentially uninhabitable…
“Thousands of species, both terrestrial and marine, will face increased extinction risks… [this] will have cascading effects on biodiversity, carbon storage, and the many ecosystem services that human societies depend on… Agricultural systems worldwide will face significant challenges… [leading] to increased food prices and heightened food insecurity.”
https://earth.org/what-2c-of-warming-will-look-like-a-comprehensive-assessment/
Yes good article. However after doing some research into this, unless we deploy some kind of carbon capture, the very minimum amount of heating we can expect by 2100 would be 2.5c.
* And that’s if we managed to stop all global carbon emissions by 2030 *
I don’t think in 5 years we will halt all emissions (they’re currently rising aren’t they?) But let’s just pretend we did for sake of denial.
How did I arrive at 2.5c. Well we’re currently at 1.5c (I don’t think we need another
two decades of this heat to confirm this) then add another 0.5c for the lag, then another 0.5c for the aerosol masking affect, and vuela
Noneofyourbusiness, welcome to the site.
I would agree that 2.5C by the end of the century is an optimistic scenario. The situation could be very, er, non-linear by then.
I was postulating that we will have, to all intents and purposes, breached 2C within ten years. I don’t think that this is a stretch, given that we have already briefly exceeded 2C in Nov 2023 and are, as I type, sitting at 1.7C.
Kraft Heinz purge climate from website and also deny all crimes of pollution and destruction from the web as many might forget how nestle is also known for many crimes against activists and the environment. In the the end thermodynamics will win!
It’s strange, Heather – even as outright denial gets a tailwind under the Trump administration, the dialogue in climate aware circles is shifting away from prevention to mitigation and adaptation. It’s like the debate is starting to bifurcate into “climate change isn’t happening” vs. “climate change is happening but we can’t stop it, so we’d better brace for impact.”
“‘Climate change is already happening’: investment funds adapt to warming world. Nearly all climate-themed funds focus on investments aimed at reducing emissions. That is starting to change… “It’s a gloomy thesis,” John Robinson said of the venture capital fund he launched this month…
“Robinson said he had noticed “a not-so-subtle” shift of discussion in the investment community towards adaptation, as realisation dawned of the physical risks already presented by climate change — and the much more serious ones ensuing from the further warming ahead.”

After reading today’s bunch of ever-worsening news, the following seems appropriate:
The USA Center for Disease Control [CDC] tracks a lot of medical statistics, at least until Prez Elon & Trump amputate all the funding. The following link is a slideshow, so I pasted below the relevant info so you don’t have to experience the agony of clicking [unless you are a masochist].
ER Visits for Climate Anxiety Surge 300% Among Under-30s, New CDC Data Shows
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported a 300% surge in emergency room visits among individuals under 30 years old for climate-related anxiety.
This significant increase underscores the urgent necessity for mental health resources tailored to address the unique challenges faced by younger generations. The growing sense of urgency among the youth reflects their vulnerability to the overwhelming threats posed by climate change.
Many are grappling with the emotional weight of inheriting a planet at risk, a burden that requires immediate attention and intervention…
—————————————
[ME] The youngsters are shocked with the fact that their elders are totally handing them a planet in full decline. Recall Greta Thuneberg’s famous speech talking about betrayal. Instead of “Et tu, Brutus?” it is “Et tu, Mom & Dad? No,no, NOOOO!”
Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
I’m not surprised, tbh, Bob.
My youngest suffers from climate anxiety. A while back we were attending an exhibition at the Design Museum in London and happened upon this “Climate Clock” counting relentlessly down to what it claims is the point at which climate change becomes irreversible – some time in 2029 if memory serves. That didn’t help.
The last thing I want to do is make him more anxious but then I hate the thought of lying to him that everything will turn out fine, so I basically plead ignorance.
Hello Pan,
I’m sorry your child is troubled. IMO, if you decide he needs professional help: try to make sure the counselor has a full understanding of Overshoot & Collapse and all the related myriad* symptoms. Otherwise, again my opinion: your child won’t give him much credibility; no confidence in what the ‘pro’ says to do.
*I wanted to double-check my understanding of the definition of myriad so I asked Microsoft Bing. Here is Microsoft Copilot’s answer:
———————————————
Copilot Answer
Very large in number
Myriad is a word that means very large in number or having great variety. It can also mean ten thousand. The word is often used to describe a large number of things or a variety of things. For example, “There are myriad ways in which global warming can imperil the environment”.

——————————
[ME] Wow! I wonder if this is now the default answer for anyone to this query. Or maybe its my custom algorithm that Microsoft generates for me.
Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
“I’m sorry your child is troubled.”
Bob, it is a fear that surfaces sporadically rather than a chronic, debilitating condition, thankfully.
Regarding the link in today’s heart-breaking climate blog about never drinking the rain, Dan Fogelberg had some appropriate lyrics in his heartbreak song, “Rhythm of the Rain” [5 minutes with lyrics]:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PR53GfE_IY
———————————-
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I’ve been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again…
….When the rain comes
They run and hide their heads
They might as well be dead
When the rain comes.
——————————-
Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
Now that is a song I know – but the Dan Fogelberg version is new to me. This is a rain-related favourite of mine (another cover; Karl Blau did the original):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJrRboKJDmA
Wow, outstanding lyrics! Great song, Pan, thanks for the post.
Bob, I my jaw dropped when I read that subhead – Never, never drink rain. I mean WTAF?? Ever heard of the hydrological cycle? We DO drink rain!! If you drink water, you drink rain. They should change the headline to: Don’t drink water!
Hello Kali,
The Vox.com author Benji Jones did NOT think far enough ahead, IMO. Once our civilization reaches a certain stage of Collapse, the Acid Rain will come back BIGTIME along with all the other Chem-Nasties. That is because we will be back to burning coal, peat, firewood, tons of plastics, billions of old tires, dried manure, you name it.
We won’t bother with catalytic converters on vehicles. We will just remove them to use as a barter item. Why let a thief get the rich benefit of your catalytic converter?
Already, more and more people are giving up on new cars [too much $$$, too complicated] and buying old vehicles that have NO pollution controls, or minimal controls. Many of these are vehicles without computers, so any decent shade-tree mechanic or owner can scrounge up parts to keep these running nearly forever.
Go to BringaTrailer.com and see the Big Money that some of these older vehicles bring in at auction!
Bob Shaw Are Humans Smarter than Yeast?
“Financial Times analysis shows that statements on climate change from leading corporations including Walmart and Kraft Heinz have been deleted or rewritten over the past year at the same time as a Republican backlash against green action has intensified…”
I’m starting to get the picture. If Trumpian “chaos” and the duelling narratives around it signify the normalization of austerity in anticipation of near-term geopolitical and economic emergencies, then the supposed backlash against climate science right when its subject is unravelling as palpable reality is the corresponding subset of that overall process.
Clearing out rainforest to host COP is not bad PR, it is a clear and unequivocal message to the public: embrace climate hardship and swallow your uncouth scepticism about the point or purpose of pretending to do something about climate change; the bluebloods and their retainers enjoy it, so you’ll just have to suck it up and take it a good little peasant.
You may be right, Jupiviv. I guess time will tell.
Here in the UK the green narrative still predominates in government circles but there is growing internal division. Economic realities are starting to impinge. There was still some celebration in the press yesterday, though, about the UK achieving the lowest greenhouse gas emissions since 1872.
As for the backlash against climate science, I was alarmed to read that we may be losing NOAA’s Mauna Loa observatory:
“The observatory has been a pole star of global scientific research. The data collected there helped to create the Keeling Curve, a famous upward-sweeping graph that documents the steep rise in carbon dioxide concentrations over decades.
““These data are our eyes on the planet,” said Ralph Keeling, a climate science professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and the son of Charles Keeling, the curve’s creator. “It’s really vital base line data for how things are going to change going forward.””

But where is the objective breakdown of that data point? Like how much of those cut emissions are carbon credits earned from – get this – choosing NOT to invest in projects with a carbon footprint – itself estimated by private third parties. But even leaving that insane elephant in the room aside – carbon footprint criteria in general tend to exclude imports and their globalized production chains. There are also reasons (one I’ve already mentioned – private consultancies) to suspect that their estimations for domestic activity are not entirely objective. It is certainly possible to reinterpret economic contraction as huge emissions reduction, which apart from everything else would be a gross underestimate of actual emissions!
That’s what I mean. All the ways for the general public to get a sense of wth is going on are being systematically demolished. In a sense emissions are like gdp, not entirely fictional but not entirely true either, and it is increasingly difficult to identify the line between them. I’m not talking about a conspiracy, rather we are looking at systems collapse in real time. This is not a few people in a smoke-filled room. This is millions, tens of millions of people acting in their own self-interest both on an individual and collective basis. Because this system places their self-interest in structural opposition to the good of society.
Why would corporations, states, NGOs, politicians, professionals etc etc want the public to know that they are not doing anything to solve climate change or any of the other problems we are facing? Especially at a time when those problems are getting worse and reform – no matter how radical-sounding – is simply not an option.
Forget voting, power of the purse, financial boycotts!
This will get the attention of the world. Do as Canada says or you are cutoff, world. Canada has more power than all the nuclear weapons exploding at one time. 😉

😂
TR, I had no idea that PornHub was Canadian. A commenter on BlueSky is suggesting a more socially combustible course of action than a mere ban:
“Canada should release the names along with search history of every American who submitted their ID to get access.”
I didn’t know either. That post cracked me up.
Told my wife about this & went directly to PornHub & sat here making comments: That’s nasty!, Oh No! I can’t believe you are doing that! Can I join in or is private perversion?
I going to the Hub right now to make more smart ass comments. “ass” is not inappropriate in this situation 😉
All of us could use a smile & a good laugh.
I’ve known this for years. My proof – Look at how they treat the Garden of Eden. More proof – They vote against their best interest.
