I’m sure all of us GAF!
And yes it is UFB!
I usually struggle with my acronyms but these ones rolled right off my tongue.
Yes epic weather in Oz of late. Winter and a very hot spring have co existed across a very small dynamic range, ~500-700km.
Prof Eliot Jacobson does love his acronyms. 😂
I was baffled by UFB for ages and had to look it up. For the uninitiated: un-f******-believable!
Extreme Temps is reporting that the heat is going to persist for parts of Oz and that records are going to fall with huge margins of 4/5C. Talking of huge margins, that stat about consecutive tropical nights in Seoul really caught my eye. The new record of 35 absolutely trounces the previous record of 26 days (from 2018).
Oh no, and now this..
Earth’s Temperature Could Increase by 25 Degrees: Startling New Research Reveals That CO2 Has More Impact Than Previously Thought
By Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea ResearchAugust 27, 2024
https://scitechdaily.com/earths-temperature-could-increase-by-25-degrees-startling-new-research-reveals-that-co2-has-more-impact-than-previously-thought/
Doubling the atmospheric CO2 levels could raise Earth’s average temperature by 7 to 14 degrees Celsius (13 to 25.2 degrees Fahrenheit), according to sediment analysis from the Pacific Ocean near California conducted by researchers from NIOZ and the Universities of Utrecht and Bristol.
The results were recently published in the journal Nature Communications.
Unique time series
“CO2 over the past 15 million years has never before been examined from a single location,” Witkowski said. The upper thousand meters of the drill core correspond to the past 18 million years.
From this record, the researchers were able to extract an indication of the past seawater temperature and an indication of ancient atmospheric CO2 levels, using a new approach.
….So, this research gives us a glimpse of what the future could hold if we take too few measures to reduce CO2 emissions and also implement few technological innovations to offset emissions,” Damsté said. “The clear warning from this research is: CO2 concentration is likely to have a stronger impact on temperature than we are currently taking into account!”
The details of their approach is fascinating.
I remember from my clash with the Watts Up With That Group was sensitivity was far overstated in their models. No doubt, they probably are still harping the same today.
Thanks, Vince. I thought Hansen’s paper suggesting a doubling of CO2 would lead to 4.8C warming was alarming enough. 😬
Yes I’ve become less phased by records. Little warnings going unheeded, with extreme records especially for heat being smashed by abnormal standard deviations. Since I’ve moved back to sub tropical NSW, in the last 7 years I’ve seen extreme record bushfires, record drought, record heat, two 1-100 year floods, the last exceeding the previous record by +2m. 24 hour totals above 1000ml over large areas in them both. If it was the Olympics WADA would be all over, whilst humans ignore the CO2 performance enhanced test results. All dismissed by “ we’ve always had floods and fire” or quoting a Dorothea MacKellar poem.
The cool patch in the Atlantic, though undetermined is what we could expect to see as high sea temperatures start influencing previously stable ocean currents and circulatory systems.
The scientist in means allows me to observe without emotion, anger or frustration, just total awe of what I’m witnessing. Humans are natural, therefore the process is natural. To all those amazing species, apologies but we’re just a slow motion asteroid.
Sometimes I think Trump should win the election and then inherit the chaos that are effects of human greed upon the biosphere. He embodies human greed.
Let’s try to keep the Trump-bashing to a minimum, Sissyfuss. If Facebook is anything to go by, my comments section risks becoming a raging firestorm of dissenting views in the lead-up to the US elections, and I don’t think my blood pressure can take it.
To your point, most election wins look like poisoned chalices to me these days. Our new PM, Keir Starmer, is telling the public today that there will be pain and unpopular decisions, and “levelling with them that Britain’s problems would only get worse before getting better.”
https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uks-starmer-says-things-will-get-worse-before-they-get-better-2024-08-27/
The public will be peeved when “better” never comes, for what is really a post-growth economy now, and politics will lurch in some new direction, I imagine.
Let’s keep criticism of all politicians, regardless of their political delusions, to a minimum.
The politicians are not the problem, it’s the idiots that elect them to office. If someone doesn’t like their elected officials, it might be one’s neighbor that is the problem. No need to rant rave or criticize anyone. Boycotts of businesses & ostracizing of friends & family is one way to deal with those that vote against one’s best interest. This is what I’m doing everyday. Or we can continue doing nothing just as it has been done with environmental pollution.
The friend of my enemy is my enemy. 😉
I don’t recall seeing anything about the ENTIRE Atlantic cooling, just that an unusually cold area had formed in the southern part, somewhere off Africa. Apparently it didn’t last long, but no one could explain why it happened at all.
That landslide in Ketchikan caught my eye, all of the towns in SE Alaska follow the same pattern, a narrow strip of development right along the water, lots of stuff built out on piers, and then insanely steep mountains rising straight up behind the town. The Mendenhall valley north of downtown Juneau is a notable exception, but isn’t much safer due to glacial lake outbursts.
I recall seeing historical anecdotes that the natives here were both amused and mystified to see all those white folks building their towns in avalanche zones.
And, yeah, I had to look up GAF…
“I don’t recall seeing anything about the ENTIRE Atlantic cooling.”
Jerry, looking back, I did go to some lengths to qualify that headline: “The [equatorial] Atlantic is cooling at record speed and nobody knows why [mid-latitudes still v hot]…”
There is much outrage on X about this article because of course it has been grist to the deniers’ mill – Jeff Berardelli, for example:
“This headline is either pure clickbait or Gizmodo is totally confused about the topic. Prob both. The article is NOT about the Atlantic as a whole, but a small part of the tropical Atlantic off Africa… a natural oscillation called the Atlantic Nino / Nina. Hard to excuse this.”
Pan, have you run across any good sources for on the ground news in Russia? I am interested to know how the people are handling their situation. I can find plenty of Chinese diaspora creating news about conditions in their homeland. But I have not found anything similar for Russia.
Nat .. not sure how much is geoblocked in your country, but RT news – english (Russia Today) covers general domestic news. If you get paranoid about getting ‘infected-by-propaganda’ reading a Russian newspaper site, just stay away from the war news articles.
A big country, but generally Putin and his cabinet remain majority popular. Putins biggest threat is from the Communist Party who are more hardliner hawkish on Ukraine. The dude who died in prison, Navalny?, only got 5% of the vote when he was allowed to run for office, (below quota needed) but it was his meetings with US and CIA officials in Germany, that put him in prison on returning to Russia. There is also a continuous trickle significant increase of West Europeans, Americans etc emigrating to Russia.
Like China, Russias climate policies are focussed on mitigation and adaptation, eg upgrading infrastructure to cope better with extreme events. Both Russia and China believe the West govts, IPCC etc focussing solely on “energy transition” and 1.5C vs 2.0C is just stupid, dumbed-down to distract. They asked themselves, what can we do to reduce the impact of the next extreme flood in this or that region? Are our dams up to coping with what’s coming? what can we do about preventing or reversing desertification? What can be done in cities, do we need to plan for population relocations? If so which ones?
So Russia, like some other countries, well know climate change is happening, and getting worse year on year, but it can’t be fixed or reversed, they’d rather focus on helping populations/regions adapt over time. Creates jobs on huge engineering projects, like building overflow flood channels etc. Eg.. China has been researching small, modular thorium salt reactors.. like their EVs, getting more efficient and cheaper over time., but still some years away from being commercial.
Countries which can undertake 5 and 10+-year projects, do a lot of it.. they plan, invest and spend for the long term, unlike most Western countries which are limited by election cycles.
I must admit, most Western countries don’t seem to support big engineering or “public works” projects anymore. Let alone planning to phase out or decommission old tech.
China talks about “new” tech, not “green” or “renewable” tech, they know so-called ‘green energy’ is a misnomer, so they just call it the “new technologies”.
And big Budgets on education, in all the STEM, pumping out engineers and climate scientists and landcare experts who can answer these sorts of questions, and research local solutions.
But Nat, this is a hard-core doomer site! LOL
Who cares about Russia etc ? as doomers know we will all go down together in a few years, as all 8 billion of us are equally to blame.
Nat, I do include quite a few Russian news sources – but on an ad hoc basis when they are reporting on local weather events that aren’t reported in the English-speaking press. So, for example:
https://www.vedomosti.ru/
https://vladivostok1.ru/
You’ll need to use Google-translate for those. There are loads of channels on YouTube offering ordinary Russians’ opinions on geopolitics etc, eg:
