“The world isn’t what it used to be.”
Understatement of the century! Thanks, Jane, but we already noticed that.
In all seriousness, I had just been thinking the same thing. Look at all the stuff being destroyed. All over the world. Look at all the places being fucked-up beyond all recognition.
Now look at what it used to be like.
Oddly enough that’s actually still possible. One of the more compelling experiences in VR is the app “Google Earth”. If you have a decent (read: gaming) computer and a low-cost VR headset then you can explore the world in 3D. The fidelity is amazing, especially in some of the more popular cities. Better yet, google has allowed people to upload their own 360deg panoramas to “Street View” for several years now. It literally feels like you are standing there. Anywhere in the world.
I wonder what Lahaina used to look like? Or Paradise? Or Jasper?
Now take that to the next level. Pick a few key spots in the world and recreate in VR what they looked like before industrial civilization. Healthy, bountiful wildlife. Healthy, bountiful forests. Healthy, bountiful fish. Healthy, bountiful insects. All of it gone now. Along with the glaciers. All gone.
We had such a lovely little planet once. Enough to make a grown man cry.
Indeed. Here’s an oldie but goodie:
“One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds. Much of the damage inflicted on the land is quite invisible to laymen. An ecologist must either harden his shell and make believe that the consequences of science are none of his business, or he must be the doctor who sees the marks of death in a community that believes itself well and does not want to be told otherwise.” ~ Aldo Leopold
Excellent, thank you!
I haven’t come across that quote before, Kali.
In a way, I am grateful that I am not an ecologist or activist by background. That must be a particularly painful journey to the realisation that nothing is going to change, until the laws of physics rein us humans in.
Have you seen Dutchsinse’ site? Altho it’s about earthquakes, it shows the eye-boggling extent of fracturing sites, which make the earth look like an alien planet.
https://www.dutchsinse.com/
Thanks, Rob. Looks like he has a popular YouTube channel, too:
https://www.youtube.com/@dutchsinse
I have only experienced one earthquake in my life. I was in Antigua, perhaps 15 or 16 years ago, and was woken up by the building shaking. Terrifying it was, and this was a measly 5 on the Richter scale.
I can’t imagine what a 7 or 8 would be like. And, for those don’t know, the Richter is a base-ten logarithmic scale, so even a 6 is ten times worse than a 5.
In other climate news, someone on reddit pointed to an exposé by Naomi Oreskes detailing all of the in-depth conversations around climate change 50 years ago, leading up to the creation of the Clean Air Act.
If the question ever becomes a legal one, then the evidence is clear. We knew exactly how fucked the world would be, right about now, if we didn’t radically dial down the economy. Especially the fossil fuel and automobile industries.
We doubled down instead, and now? Yep, we be fucked.
We have had the information but not the agency to do much about climate change.
Kind of reminds me of the Vogon spaceship commander’s final riposte to humanity before destroying Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass in “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.” Although, I guess that version of humanity had neither the knowledge nor the agency to avert their fate:
“There’s no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now.
“…What do you mean you’ve never been to Alpha Centauri? Oh, for heaven’s sake, mankind, it’s only four light years away, you know. I’m sorry, but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that’s your own lookout. Energize the demolition beams.”
In other climate news, a new paper detailing plant and insect remains found at the bottom of an ice-core that has been sitting in a freezer for 30 years. Turns out all those miles of ice are not as monolithic as once assumed.
The remains prove that there was once tundra sporting Arctic Poppies at locations that are currently under two miles of ice. Not that long ago, relatively speaking, maybe half a million years ago. CO2 levels were not much higher than they are now. This proves that the climate need not change much before the ice-sheets are doomed to melt.
Probably only needs to change about as much as we have already FUBAR’d it, as a matter of fact. Oops!
Greenland ice-core, if anyone was wondering.
That should be somewhere up in my laundry-list of climate woe, Jerry. ^^^

Heather, Debby may come back for a second bite of the cherry after this round of flooding:

I don’t think I will need to call out the Clever Apes about their O-word, for much longer.
Guy McPherson might be wrong. NTHE could occur in 2025. Gird your loins! Brace yourself! But don’t complain, this is what the “you” chose.
I’m an ecologist. I think my mind has meandered towards philosophy to cope now. It’s not the demise of humans we’re witnessing but the post climax of morally bankrupt and technically literate civilisation. Behind closed doors it’s known we can’t replace oil and continue on the west’s pointless consumption of resources whilst maintaining our decadently opulent lifestyles.
The scientist in me watches in fascination and awe as I never imagined I’d see the changes and events of the last decade in my lifetime.
An Inconvenient Truth is 100% accurate 20 years after release, rather astonishing viewing now. Tipping points will be ancient history by the time we recognise them. The wobble has passed, the new system balance is emerging and it’s not going to be pretty.
Thanks Harry for curating the evidence in one convenient stop.
PS The cocaine reminds of the kilos of barnacle encrusted packages washing up around Sydney’s coastline for months earlier this year
Sean, you are welcome.
Apparently, more Australians take cocaine than any other nationality on earth, with us Britons in second.
Anecdotally, it is popular amongst young adults in my corner of the Hebrides. Seems odd to me, as there just isn’t the stimulus here to match that wired energy, but perhaps my stereotype of users being wild-partying bankers or adverting execs in clubs and bars is outdated.
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/health/cocaine-health-europe-drugs-study-b1128801.html
I appreciate your thoughts, Sean, from a bona fide ecologist. Yes, fascination, awe, and still…shock.
All good Panopticon & Cassandra, I need a place with understanding fellow witnesses.
Obviously my fellow countrymen have more money than sense. Beyond a simple leaf from the Erythroxylaceae family there’s too much blood on the snow.
PPS My original thought that inspired commenting. In 1st year at university, week 4 of Ecology 101, we were introduced to population studies. 1st graph the human population from BC to 1993, exponentially perfect in all its mathematical magic. Another graph shown later that lesson of boom crash populations. The two graphs were perfectly the same, just the second one plotted the 21st century.
A most perplexing realisation was triggered.
Perplexing indeed. 😆
One of my big ‘aha’ moments was looking at a graph Paul Chefurka had made, showing the tight correlation between oil production and world population growth, both soaring dizzyingly over the last century or so, of course. He later made one that neatly tied in global grain production, too.
Yet as obvious as that makes it, the economics “profession” to this day treats oil as tho it were simply another commodity. Peak oil? No prob … we’ll just replace it, ‘cause, ya know, that’s what economic theory says, and theory always trumps reality, n’est-ce pas?
The voices in my head always ask tough questions: How many people at the Olympics, at the Harris/Walz rally & anyplace else that has access to the Climate report, read it today?
Dying dumb is on many bucket lists. I think they will be successful.
Eating insects just gives you… worms, idiot idea, but good for getting rid of idiots if it saves the planet. Make sure politicians have the lions shear lol
