He cited as encouraging the U.S. passage of the Inflation Reduction Act — which contains significant provisions to fight climate change — and the global agreement in 2021’s COP 26, whose commitments, if enacted, would limit warming to 2 degrees C, which Mann acknowledged is still too high.
“It’s not too late for us to take the actions to keep warming below 1.5 Celsius. The obstacles at this point aren’t physical, they are not technological, they are entirely political,” he said. “And political obstacles can be overcome.”

Mann, however, is absolutely right that we doomists “potentially” lead young people, students, and other hot polloi to “inaction,” though the word “inaction” does a lot of the unpaid work. What “action” other than cashing paychecks and jaw-boning has the environmental non-movement accomplished?
All of our actions and inactions have “potential” effects, and it could be that we doomists (I’m awaiting my first Qatar check, by the way, Prof. Mann) are single-handedly (we might have numbered around the Dunbar number, total of 150, ten years ago) hoodwinking the masses into sitting this one out. On the other hand, “potentially” the doomists have zero to do with fossil fuel global reality. Let the world decide.
There is no politics remaining, only “anti-politics,” in Carl Boggs’ term, so how could “politics” be the answer? What politics has Mann ever been connected with that could demonstrate his action effectiveness?
This is what I imagined happened after the camera lights went out. Mann leans over to the older woman and says,” Damn, I’m glad that’s over. You and I know we’re just saying this shit because we need to give our students some reason to keep attending our classes, and the parents to keep footing the bill. Any garden-variety idiot knows that shit’s toast, fam.
I’ll sell about ten books if I say that, though.”

He clings to the dubious belief that being a highly partisan Democrat is the best way to avert climate catastrophe. A typical quote: “Remember who the enemy is: Republicans.”
He also serves on the advisory board of The Climate Mobilization, “an American grassroots advocacy group calling for a national economic mobilization against climate change on the scale of the home front during World War II, with the goal of 100% clean energy and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025” [Wiki].
Given that 2025 is now less than nine months away, his action effectiveness has been found wanting there.
Michael Mann does not tell the truth. Period. Dr Andrew Glickson in his book, The Event Horizon, published in 2022, We passed 2 C above the 1750 baseline. Even Elliot Jacobson in post included above says planetary warming is 1.68 above the 1850-1900 baseline. They keep moving the baseline!
Even the IPCC in it’s September 2019 publication, said climate change is abrupt and irreversible.
Its another mass extinction event on magnificent Planet Earth. It’s a gift we get to visit. Homo Sapiens are the dinosaurs. And all people are Homo Sapiens , with different amounts of melanin in our skins, One Race:Human. That is the truth, a scientific fact.

What he really does, though, is strategically manage the narrative, believing that fate has called upon him to sound the “Goldilocks” climate change alarm, with juuust the right amount of scary.
Wow. Bird Flu in humans is looking more and more like it’s just a matter of time. What a shit-show that’s going to be!
The further we sail into ecological overshoot the more vulnerable to global crises we become. The ability of our society to cope with crises becomes critically overstretched, until finally, the proverbial “straw that broke the camels back” comes along. Something like a flu pandemic, for example. The world of 100 years ago still had the resources and the overhead to deal with a global flu pandemic. Even one that was occurring about the same time as a brutal world war. Now? Not so much.
Now add that we could be facing multiple global crises at the same time. The so-called “polycrisis”. The hits just keep on coming and at some point our society simply no longer has the resources to cope. Hilarity ensues.
And yet it was the post on chocolate that got my attention.
It occurred to me that, in the years ahead, things are just going to keep getting more and more unavailable and/or too expensive for folks like me. Life going forward will be a process of giving things up as either out of reach or simply gone for good.
For billions of the poorest folks that will mean deciding which essentials to give up.
For the luckier billion or so it will mean deciding which luxuries to give up. Too bad those folks think they are entitled to those luxuries. Ouch.
I’ve said it before in other venues, the only practical thing to do at this point is put the entire population in hospice care. Everyone must start giving end-of-life hospice care to everyone else. It’s the only compassionate thing to do.

It is bleak to think of a world of fewer pleasures and shrinking possibilities, particularly for the kids, but that is where we are inexorably headed. I guess we just have to do our best to keep counting such blessings as we have.
I told my husband to enjoy chocolate this year, because next year it will be too expensive. Normally I’d go for a slice of raspberry cake, but its chocolate this year.
To even be able to purchase a slice of cake at all is a luxury.
My only silver lining thought is, chocolate/cake/treats will all be that much sweeter when they actually become the rare special events they once were.
Nat, investor speculation is partly fuelling the current, spectacular rise in cocoa prices, so we may see them come down a bit in the mid-term. But, yes, the era of cheap chocolate is over, for sure.
Re your silver lining, that sounds like a healthy perspective. A sense of abundance flows from a deep appreciation for what you have, rather than being some objective reality… Although just how helpful such “self-help section” spiritual musings actually prove under the extreme duress of collapsing economies remains to be seen. 😬😂
