Yes, these are alarming..saw on the local TV station news about the sawfish deaths and other fish species spinning behavior anomalies. Can’t recall the name, but the idea is that once enough “essential” workers stop showing for work then things quickly start breaking down. Yeah, bird flu (and swine flu) crossing species has always been the first fear. The next is the virus becoming internally contagious within a new species.. ie crossing to a goat from a bird is one thing, the next is going from goat to goat. Humans can get it from handling birds or goats… but if/when it passes (easily) from human to human all hell breaks loose. Many years ago, when I was working for public health, we were daily monitoring SARS and MERS outbreaks. I suspect many govts are doing the same thing now with sitreps from the WHO “sentinel centres”. Eg in Hong Kong, Spain etc there are farm labs twice daily checking their goats, pigs etc as well as regularly sampling commercial farms.
