To be fair, NZ hasn’t been exempt during his time there. A blog like Gail’s, which demonstrates the catastrophic inadequacy of mainstream economic thinking, will tend to attract contrarian types who challenge mainstream thinking on a wide range of issues.

One of my daughters lives in Perth, (the worlds most isolated city), is beautiful city, but a very long way from anywhere else, and unless you were born and bred there with family etc, can become lonely and homesicky inducing, very expensive to travel ‘back home’… no popping on the motorway for a few hours to visit the folks.. it takes 3 days to drive to civilisation in the east …. i did it twice in my youth, non-stop, 3 days, 2 nights, rotating 3 drivers in shifts in an old Ford ute (pickup truck) with a blown head gasket 🙂

Hasnt been bad where I am, not even a heatwave worthy of the name, just wetter than it should be. In a relatively sheltered alpine pocket, even missing the storms raging south of me in Victoria. Too many insects with the wet summer warmth. Need a pet bluetongue lizard to keep the insects in the house down. Get chewed by mozzies and other mitoid and insectoid “bities” when attacking the overgrowth around the house. I’m thinking of putting up a sign on the front gate saying “Beware of the Triffids”.

I woke up to this mess this morning but it looks like it will warm up to 40 f later on melting alot of it today.
Well I discovered why they might be using the 1860 baseline. Oil was discovered in Pennsylvania, although prior to this year other oils have been used for heating like whale oil. Still doesn’t make any sense since other types of oils were used for heating and more than likely causing heating and change in the atmosphere and such.
Heather, we need a historian to tease out those details but I am assuming that the 1860’s must be when industrialisation really kicked up a gear, as it spread from Britain to other parts of the world.
Certainly, those Caribbean sponges suggest that that is when we really got cooking, both literally and figuratively, alas.

Hard to believe some climate scientists are still hoping our new climate regime, starting with the 0.5degC global jump last summer, is just “a blip” and will soon return to “normal”.
Even more difficult to comprehend why the climate scientists who are warning that the climate crisis is accelerating are being labeled as extremist and overly alarmist.
Anyway, judging by how extreme the extremes are actually becoming right before our eyes, we probably won’t have to wait long to find out who’s right.
