Global oceans were warmer last month than any other May in records stretching back to the 19th century, the European Union’s climate monitoring unit reported Wednesday…

“Year-round, long-term trends have added 0.6C to the ocean’s surface waters in 40 years, said C3S deputy director Samantha Burgess, noting that April had also seen a new record for heat.”

Record hot oceans continue as weather extremes escalate…

The bottom line: It’s become cliche for climate stories to say that we’re in uncharted territory; but in this situation, it bears repeating. We’ve never gone into an expected El Niño event with the oceans already so warm, making them prone to marine heat waves with their associated coral bleaching.”

Climate change has a dramatic impact on the global water cycle, say researchers…

“The laws of physics tell us that a warmer atmosphere will absorb more water vapor. Despite this, many regions are expected to suffer from water shortages. Schär explains the apparent paradox: “The absolute moisture content of the atmosphere is rising overall, but relative humidity can also fall regionally. In other words, more water will evaporate from the ground; but at the same time, cloud formation will also decline in certain regions, where there will then be less precipitation.””
