I heard this on my local radio this morning, about the sudden drop in Antarctic sea-ice.

Meanwhile, my local city has been refreshingly “normal” since January. We had a true chilly autumn and winter is just about here.
With the El Nino expected by September/October…(our southern spring)
we are thinking this may be our last “true” winter for several years.
Although energy prices are set to rise around 25% in another month. The government is subsidising those on the lowest incomes, by paying a portion to their power providers directly, those of us only a few rungs above those poorest, are going to be scrounging to get through winter.
More contraction in discretionary income 🙁
hello Rain
to put everything in perspective, what are the expected ‘ energy more’ costs for an average Australian household in let’s say NSW and more south Melbourne during your winter.
Sorry Zip, Missed this first time around.
The best I can tell you, is that it varies a lot.
The below may give you some idea, based on average quarterly bills (balanced across the year) – just add 20% for the new prices coming in.
https://www.finder.com.au/average-energy-bill-australia
Personally, I am on annual plan contracts, that renew on January 1, but price changes occur on July 1. I also prefer a Set-and-Forget payment plan, where I pay fortnightly direct-debit on payday. During summer I get bills saying “DO NOT PAY” with $100’s in Credit balance, LOL but I know that credit will be ‘burned away’ during the winter months 🙂
The story you posted on NH’s frost killing the fruit crops is in the state I live in and it has been an unusually COLD month. It is supposed to heat up to mid to upper 80’s next week. I hate to admit that I’ve enjoyed the cool temps and lack of humidity because typically by now it is HHH. We have also had a severe rain event that dropped 4 inches o rain in 12 hours causing washouts. So yes climate change isn’t always about the heatwaves. But it has allowed me to pretend its not happening for a minute.
To get an apple crop where I live, a high mountain desert, I had to build a “temperate green house”. Temperatures typically are very warm for several weeks in April and that is always followed by lows in the low 20s for several days usually when the trees are in full bloom. So to get apples I have to close up the building every evening and use misters to keep the temp up.
Well, not this year! We have a great apple crop, and I didn’t do anything except keep the trees well watered.
(Dunno why I wrote any of that. What I meant to say is that I am sorry for your apple crop. Better luck next year.)
Sad to see that all of the heatwave records this spring/summer are already starting to blur together in my mind. And it’s not even peak El Nino heatwave season yet. Can’t wait!
If we hit 3C of warming we’re gone along with everything else. And we’re doing nothing to avoid it in any practical manner. I have no hope or trust in our species of being able to do anything but continue down the path to Extinction.
As record after record falls, as the “Defense” dept warns that climate change is the biggest threat to US National Security, the “Climate Change is a hoax” candidate for the US Presidency can announce his candidacy for the 2024 election without a whisper of protest by the Democrats against his atavistic agenda of stoking the destruction. Meanwhile, this month’s record 424 ppm’s of co2, indicating the farce that 350.org represents (450.org would be more accurate, as mankind will Never see a 350ppm world again) has received not one word of coverage in the MSM. In other words, that mankind is doing ANYthing that will help alleviate the caos it has engendered is exactly Zero. I. E., that we are doing anything about climate change is the hoax, not its existence.
Yves Smith has a good one in case Rob Lowrey didn’t make his point strongly enough. 🙂
https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2023/05/ice-melt-in-the-pipeline.html
From Hansons article:
“Improved knowledge of glacial-to-interglacial global temperature change implies that fastfeedback equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) is 1.2 ± 0.3°C (2σ) per W/m2. Consistent analysis of temperature over the full Cenozoic era – including “slow” feedbacks by ice sheets and trace gases – supports this ECS and implies that CO2 was about 300 ppm in the Pliocene and 400 ppm at transition to a nearly ice-free planet …
but there is more:
“[T]he human-made climate forcing exceeds the forcing at transition from a largely ice-free planet to glaciated Antarctica, even with inclusion of a large, negative, aerosol climate forcing [“aerosols,” i.e., air pollution, are a climate cooling agent; without them, earth would be hotter by several degrees]. Equilibrium global warming for today’s GHG level is 10°C for our central estimate … including the amplifications from disappearing ice sheets and non-CO2 GHGs (Sec. 4.4). Aerosols reduce equilibrium warming to about 8°C. Equilibrium sea level change is + 60 m (about 200 feet).”
So, obviously at 425ppm (not counting the CH4 at ~2000ppb) it is too late to do anything about AGW. It is coming and (burning a bunch more FFs) to build wind mills and solar farms is counter productive.
And of course, we all know that Hanson is very conservative with his statements and science. Bottom line, the earth will be ice free soon and sea level rise will become obvious and deadly within a decade or two. I still think we’ll nuke ourselves first though so not to worry.
