Ducks are believed to be superspreaders of bird flu in part because they travel so far as they migrate. Ducks contaminated by mercury pollution are significantly more likely to get bird flu, a study found Wednesday, pointing towards another way that human-driven changes to the natural world increase the risk of viruses spreading.”

At least 10 people have been killed by recent floods occasioned by torrential rainfall in Nigeria’s northern state of Bauchi, a local relief agency official said Wednesday.

At least 16 dead as heavy rains trigger landslides in Uganda.

Iranian authorities have confirmed the arrest of 25 people during a protest on August 24 against a cut in water supplies in the western Iranian city of Hamedan.

A crying baby sloth was reunited with its mother on Wednesday after the pair were separated following their rescue from wildfires in Bolivia.

Oregon’s largest wildfire tops 100,000 acres, still 0% contained.

“The Double Creek Fire, burning in Eastern Oregon’s Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, nearly doubled again in size Wednesday, due to hot, dry conditions and gusty winds. Fire officials reported Thursday morning that the fire has now grown to 100,977 acres. And it’s still 0% contained.”

Fort St. John, British Columbia, saw the warmest summer on record this year at 1.8 degrees Celsius above average temperatures.

This is calculated by the overall mean temperature for the months of June, July and August… This summer’s average temperature in Fort St. John came in at 16.8 degrees Celsius, according to Terri Lang.”

The climate crisis has driven the world to the brink of multiple “disastrous” tipping points, according to a major study.

It shows five dangerous tipping points may already have been passed due to the 1.1C of global heating caused by humanity to date.

“These include the collapse of Greenland’s ice cap, eventually producing a huge sea level rise, the collapse of a key current in the north Atlantic, disrupting rain upon which billions of people depend for food, and an abrupt melting of carbon-rich permafrost.”
